"A-Xu," he repeats, more desperately but still quiet enough that no one on the cliff above will hear. Wen Kexing grabs Zhou Zishu's wrist and says, one more time, "A-Xu. It's under control. Just—trust me."

Ye Baiyi had a plan. After washing his hands of Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu, he was going to swing by the mountain to see if those two idiots succeeded in opening the treasury then go from town to town, eating and drinking his fill (he is never full) until his long awaited death grasped his old, ornery heart and freed him from this prison. Simple, foolproof.
But instead of sitting in a warm restaurant and drinking it dry, he’s holed up inside a shabby safehouse on the side of the mountain with a trembling, wounded scorpion who seems determined to die.
Ye Baiyi allows himself a long suffering sigh. He’s earned the right.

Ye Baiyi saves Xie'er's life on a whim, sending the two broken souls down a long road toward healing, new beginnings, and love.

Wen Kexing, apparently entirely revitalized, immediately grins. "Anywhere, anywhere! I'm overjoyed to be of service wherever my lord wants me."
"You'd better be," murmurs Zhou Zishu, and then laughs when Wen Kexing stumbles.(or: 5 times Wen Kexing knows Zhou Zishu best, +1 time he doesn't need to)

He reaches for Wen Kexing's hands; touching Wen Kexing has become as natural as breathing, or perhaps it's the other way around. Being with Wen Kexing means being alive, or maybe not something quite so all-consuming as being alive, but rather the many smaller intimacies that coalesce into a life: Wen Kexing is the click of chopsticks at a common table and the rustle of blankets in a shared bed.
Wen Kexing's hands are cooler than normal. At first, Zhou Zishu attributes it to the chill of the room, but when he feels for a pulse in his wrist and finds nothing, his stomach curdles like souring milk.

The happy feeling Zhou Zishu had cultivated in Wen Kexing as soon as Ye Bai Yi left was not enough to keep Wen Kexing’s mind from turning on itself. Zhou Zishu knew he was the Ghost Valley Master.
During all the way back to the manor, Wen Kexing’s thoughts and feelings were in complete chaos. All he could think was *he knows, he knows, he knows, heknowsheknowshekowsheknows*. The words were running around each other in an eternal loop, making Wen Kexing’s anxiety grow uncontrollably.
