There was another student here.
Tom recognized him vaguely—while transfer students were not necessarily uncommon due to the war, they were rare enough to at least make an impression. This particular transfer student was in his year, sorted into Ravenclaw after an impressively long hat stall. He looked like he might be descended from the Potter line, but he did not share the surname so his lineage was of no particular interest to Tom. Nothing about him was of particular interest to Tom, in fact, and yet here he stood, holding the book that Tom had come here to find.
It would be a good time to turn away. The Restricted Section was restricted for a reason—only books documenting extremely dangerous or extremely advanced magic were stored here.
Tom’s feet, however, suddenly felt as if they were made of lead. It wasn’t magic keeping him tied down, but something far more mysterious like curiosity or even fate. In any case, the delay was all it took for the Ravenclaw to lift his chin and meet Tom’s eyes.
This Ravenclaw, Tom realized, had eyes as blindingly green as the Killing Curse.

Summary
The start of Jaskier's winter position at court is celebrated with a grand ball dedicated the artists brought in for the winter. But not all goes as planned when another guest recognizes him. Backed against the wall and faced with the threat of marriage, he spits out the first lie to comes to his mind and claims he is already married - to Geralt, of all people. To his immense surprise, Geralt goes along with it. In doing so, he commits to spending the winter by Jaskier's side and playing the doting husband. It's fortunate he does, because court seems more dangerous than Jaskier remembered. Monsters lurk in the corners and danger lurks behind every door. Without Geralt there, he might have been frightened. With Geralt, he's more concerned by his own growing feelings for the witcher. Can he get through the winter without Geralt catching on?

Geralt lies facing Jaskier, hands tucked under his cheek, watching him through the darkness. He wonders if Jaskier knows that he can see him, watch him back. Probably not.
“I’m sorry for dragging you into this,” he says quietly, and Jaskier waves a hand dismissively between them.

It’s funny, but it twists something in his chest.OR; this author imagined what it would be like to be on the recieving end of a hickey, especially if you were pining your ass off after the one giving it, but pretending not to.

“And the moment I can get out of this storm, we will cease ‘traveling together’ once more,” Jaskier says bitterly. Traveling together. Ha. Geralt makes it sound like they were nothing more than acquaintances on the road.
To him, Jaskier supposes it was. Unfortunately, Jaskier’s own heart and mind never received the memo.
Nivellen raises his brows, glancing between them. “Ah. I’ve… prodded something, haven’t I?”
“There is nothing between us to prod. There never was,” Jaskier insists. “Continue your game. I rather enjoy watching Geralt lose.”

Or, Geralt had never called Jaskier a friend, not once in their twenty years traveling together. Now he returns to uproot Jaskier's life, Child Surprise in tow and mentions of an 'old friend' on his lips. It makes Jaskier want to scream.

Geralt huffs out a laugh. “I don’t miss anything.” It sounds bitter, even with the deep swallows of White Gull he’s taken, even with the months that have passed since he last saw Jaskier.
“Think you might,” The mage says, all haughty and knowing. “I want to give you a gift,” he continues, calm and collected, face annoyingly attractive, the silver in his hair and beard catching in the low tavern light.
“I don’t want anything from you,” Geralt protests, knowing a gift from a mage is never a real gift. A nuisance at its most innocent, a death sentence at its worst.
“Bit late for that, witcher,” The mage says.

Jaskier has become adept at looking at Geralt only as much as Geralt wants to be looked at - but it's harder, recently, when his eyes catch on Geralt's body without his notice. Geralt, for his part, has accepted the fact that Jaskier just doesn't want him, and that stings a little but he's fine with it. It's just a little confusing now that Jaskier smells like he does.
Or, grey-ace Jaskier tries to figure out what being attracted to someone entails while Geralt loses his mind over what Jaskier smelling like attraction means. Rating is for the second chapter only.
