Double-checking her golden contact lenses in the mirror, Rumi fluffs out her hair—long and loose from its braid—so that it flows in waves behind her, a vision of violet cascading down the black velvet of her suit jacket. She tugs on her signature white butler gloves, straightens her lavender tie, and steps out of the back and onto the floor itself.
The bell dings, a signal for new cafe guests arriving in the waiting room.
Perfect timing.
Rumi grins sharply, schooling her features into classy neutrality, then glances through the window of the door to the waiting area, sees two freshly familiar women, and yelps.
Or: Rumi's balancing life as a university student by day and themed cafe butler by night when the fall semester starts, where she quickly finds herself partnering with two classmates—Zoey and Mira—for a group project. It’s completely innocent, of course, the way her tall, pink-haired goddess of a girlfriend says her polite ‘please’s and ‘thank you’s to their flight crew on the way back to Seoul.
Not quite as innocent, the way Zoey’s brain quickly and helpfully reminds her that she has yet to hear Mira say either phrase in the heat of passionate sex.

Mira tilted her head. “Dinner? Pants? What do these mean? We hunt for food, not ‘take out.’ And your… coverings? We wear hides for practicality, not barriers.”
Rumi buried her face in her hands, groaning in embarrassment. “Oh god, never mind. It’s a human joke. I mean… you should spend time with me, get to know me better—talk, share stories, build trust—before trying to take things further. Like romantically, or whatever this is.”
Zoey’s eyes glinted with sudden excitement. “So… you’re saying we can mate with you if we court you right? If we do this ‘process’ your way?” Her tail swished eagerly, the prospect of learning more about humans making her light up like a bioluminescent bloom.

When she arrives, she's greeted by the pair wearing revealing bunny suits and hungry expressions. But Rumi has a reputation to uphold and a job to do, so she keeps her cool and remains a gentleman about it.

She hooked a finger under Mira’s choker, pressing her knuckle gently against her throat, and tugged. She felt more than heard the way it made Mira’s breath hitch. She did it again, and this time Mira’s nails dug in deeper involuntarily.
Which was a very interesting reaction.

Summary
The irritation already simmering under her skin surged hot enough that the scathing response was halfway up her throat in an instant.
Then she actually looked at the woman, brows pulled as her lips dropped into a sneer—and promptly forgot every single thought in her head.
Oh.
The woman standing in front of her was, quite frankly, unfairly beautiful.
She wore a zoo uniform polo over a long-sleeved compression shirt, paired with shorts that Mira was reasonably certain violated at least several workplace regulations regarding inseam length.
For one briefly catastrophic moment, Mira suddenly understood why “sexy zookeeper” had been on that Halloween costume list Zoey’d scrounged up last year. Then she immediately shut that thought down before it could do any permanent damage.

Mira understood bees—and Zoey, sometimes. Other people? Not so much. She had only agreed to give a conservation talk to raise awareness, not spend the whole day distracted by the zoo's resident butterfly keeper.
