Dick wakes up, probes his side. Under the lucid heaviness of sleep, he’d dreamt his ribs gone, wound sticky. In his dream, Jason’s fingers had touched a place in his chest cavity that will never be touched again. He’d taken the knife– a jagged hunting blade– and sliced Dick from pelvis to throat. Gooey with blood, he had dipped his fingers into Dick’s stomach and started to rip at the fine tissue around his organs. Dick had gasped wetly as his lungs were probed, his liver given a squeeze.
“Mon petit aile,” Jason whispered as he unspooled Dick’s intestines, but it was a Jason who had been allowed to grow older. A Jason who loomed over Dick with the strength of a grown man.
In the dark of his bedroom, Dick does not curl up, swell and cry, but instead– he desperately, despairingly, achingly wishes for Jason to touch him again. To make him hurt, like he’s always made Dick hurt. Not just his ribs but his cheek, his hand, his soft insides.
To take everything that’s owed to him.
This is Dick Grayson: a desperate animal chasing after dead boys that remind him of his mother. He sinks his teeth into skin and calls it love; he has never known how to love any other way.

There are several things about Dick’s seemingly impromptu road trip that don’t add up. The vague directions and weird destinations, the campervan with all the windows blacked out, the fridge in the back Jason’s not allowed to touch, the strictly nocturnal schedule, and most importantly, the fact Dick won’t tell him anything about the case he’s on. It’s infuriating and baffling in equal measure, and if Jason weren’t so stubborn, he would’ve packed it in by now.
There are several reasons why Dick should’ve never let Jason force his way onto his trip. The inherent danger of the mission, the deeply unsavoury characters he’s meeting, the weird rules Dick has to impose without explanation, and most importantly, the difficulty of keeping his vampiric condition under wraps in such close quarters.
But, the more time they spend on the road together, the less either one regrets his decision.

“Do you think we can convince them that we’re together? Maybe even engaged! I’m sure Doctor Thompkins would love to be the officiator!”
At the suggestion Jason feels an immediate vile response on the tip of his tongue. Because what Jason will never admit to anyone who has ever known him is how desperately he wants to be openly loved without shame. That he wants someone who would grab him when they were excited and kiss his palms and smile at him and want him. He wants so viciously to be wanted and he doesn’t know how much longer empty praise from people he had protected or long poetry or old novels full of understanding will be a good enough stand-in for being wanted.
And it was Roy suggesting it. That very fact makes something inside him seethe, something inside him turns into a feral animal from shame. It claws at his rib cage in search of an outlet.
