“Why us?” Beau asks, a quiet night on watch, the two of them awake in the dome, while everyone else sleeps.
“It’s a disease, Beauregard. Why do some people get cancer and others don’t? Why do some people catch a cold and others don’t?” Caduceus explains, a look of fondness on his face before the cough comes, violent red and green erupting from his throat. “We are just lucky, I guess.”
Essek, Beau, and Caduceus are all suffering from unrequited love, and a disease that causes flowers to grow in their lungs. Why them and not the rest of the Mighty Nein, who knows, but this disease seems made to cause them suffering. Hanahaki AU: Beaujester(/yasha), Shadowgast, Fjorclay.

He’s still waiting for the other shoe to drop though-- those many months ago Beauregard and Veth had spoken of punishment, of retribution. He knew he deserved it and he was sure they meant he’d be turned in for his crimes. Executed, tortured, maybe even by the Nein themselves. It would have been a cruel fate, to be punished so severely by the only friends he’d ever held dear. Or maybe, he thought, they would leave his fate to the Assembly, or to the Queen. They did none of the above. Instead, they had held out a hand to him, welcomed him amongst their odd little patchwork group, and told him it was his job now to spread good. It was still taking him a bit of time to adjust.

Summary
Dirty, matted red hair hangs stringy and limp around the prisoner’s face. He’s pale and thin, disturbingly so, and his clothes hang loosely off him, but those are the features of a common prisoner. That’s not the interesting part. The interesting part, Essek notes, is that he’s a Fire Nation citizen, if the shape of his face is anything to go by. A firebender, in fact. They’re easier to identify than other benders, in his experience. It’s the smell of them, ash and woodsmoke, and the soot-stained lines of their hands.
“Who are you?” He asks, softer this time as he squints into the semidarkness. His eyes are not the typical amber that denotes a Fire Nation citizen and instead are a startling blue. Essek flinches despite himself as they lock onto his own.
“Who are you?” Essek asks sharply. The man does not flinch but his hands flex in his manacles and they clink softly in the silence.
“I asked you first.”
