Shane's always been a bit of a dog with a bone.
The man had once tried explaining it to him. Said that it was like having a song stuck in his head, the same chorus repeating until he finally played it out loud - until he verbalized the thought or followed through on the idea. Rick had admired this relentless pursuit often, had praised his friend's dogged nature when it was due but maybe that had been wrong. Maybe he'd been too lenient, too reliant on Shane doing the roughing up. Had become too relaxed and used to Shane's ways to notice the signs of his nature morphing into something else.
He's certainly noticing it now.

“Something good,” Near echoes, at a loss.
Mello taps his fingers on the side of his cup, impatient. “Yeah. It doesn’t have to be big, just— something good that’s happened since— since.”
This Mello is new and strange to him, unnerving. Near had not heard from or seen him since the end of the investigation, and then, last week, he emailed out of the blue and told Near to meet him in a diner in rural Pennsylvania at five in the morning on a Wednesday, and now he is demanding that Near tell him something good.

He had used Near’s own way of thinking against him and much to Near’s chagrin, it worked. “I suppose that is true.” he said, defeated, eyes glancing to the side to avoid Mello’s.
Mello leaned his face in closer, trailing a finger underneath Near’s chin and gently turning his face upwards. “So let’s try it, then.” He reached his other hand behind Near, wrapping his arm around his waist and pulling him closer. “If you don’t like it, I’ll never bring it up again.”

Near didn’t cry when some of the other orphans bullied him.
Near didn’t cry when Mello, having a bad day, took his anger out on the other boy by yelling and saying L didn’t care about him.
Near didn’t cry when he found his favorite toy robot smashed on the floor, mysteriously broken by someone.
And Near wasn’t crying when he fell off the bike. He was just… vaguely irritated; otherwise, he was completely apathetic. Yes, it hurt. Yes, it was kind of embarrassing. Yes, he regretted coming outside. But he didn’t cry.
