Summary
The first time Ajax meets Zhongli, the streets of Snezhnaya’s capital are covered in a blanket of snow so thick it makes his old bones ache. What the cold does to him is nothing compared to what it does to the Liyuan, though—he can see the young scholar shake under his huge furry coat, the hat clumsily tied in a way that no Snezhnayan mother would ever have allowed. He waves at him from across the street, and when golden eyes meet his even as carriages pass through the slush left behind by the snow on the street between them, the man’s eyes tug at him like old scars tug at his skin.
So this is the man Ningguang’s sent to rip his gnosis from his chest. Interesting.

In a world where Morax is the God of Death whose power keeps the damned in Hell where they belong, he cannot even dream to live a true mortal life as Zhongli. His godhood, granted to him by his Gnosis, is what protects the entirety of Teyvat from the scorn of the dead. More precious and important than his own life, he guards it as the true Gate of Hell that it is.
But the Cryo Archon still requires said Gnosis for her own means, and thus comes up with an appropriate strategy to acquire it. Even when Childe, Tartaglia the Eleventh Harbinger, is set to literally unlease Hell upon Teyvat by stealing the heart of the feared God of Death, he knows not what consequences will follow him home.
"Morax... You are the guardian of the last Gate, protecting the world from the hands of the damned. I understand this– but you need not fear love. Simply being wary of who you let into your heart is enough, is it not?”

"Do you understand its meaning, Childe?" He finally asks. There's a hard glint in his eyes, like he's trying to steel himself for his answer.
"Yeah." Loyalty and devotion, right? Between business partners? "I do. It's traditional, isn't it?"
Zhongli's eyes glow a warm amber in the near darkness, reflecting the soft shine of the lanterns. He studies his face with a strange intensity, as though Childe were a piece of high quality Nocticulous Jade being sold for suspiciously small sum and he's trying to find the blemishes that would explain the price. The weight of his gaze should be uncomfortable, boring into him like he can see into the very depths of his abyss-tainted soul, but Childe finds himself preening under the attention instead.
Childe accidentally proposes to Zhongli. Zhongli accepts.

It’s been two months since the storm, and Childe hasn’t seen Zhongli not even once, not since that fateful meeting with the Signora where the truth is finally unveiled.
And what a fun little kick to the gut that is, the realization that not only had he been played by all sides, but he's also being tossed aside like trash now that his use had run its course.
It’s not that Childe doesn’t get it. He’s a Harbinger. He knows first-hand what it means to do his duty, to put the mission first and his personal feelings far, far away, preferably locked up in a box, where it wouldn’t interfere with his job. He knows what it’s like working with vipers, to scheme and plot and lie in wait for the opportune moment to stab his opponent in the back.
But this time, this time Childe can’t help but feel a little (a lot) gutted.
Stupid. He’s gotten himself stupidly attached.
