    Summary

Under less sleep-deprived circumstances, you would've spotted him before getting far enough through the doorway to make your presence known, and you would've turned right around and walked back to your room. But you didn't, and now you were standing across the room from your chronically stoic, emotionless Lieutenant, who, for the first time you'd ever seen, was neither stoic nor emotionless.

Ghost had traded the hard skull mask for the fabric one he often wore, the black facepaint around his eyes faded and creased enough that you could see his skin. He was sitting at the table on the other side of the room, gripping a teacup with both hands so hard that his knuckles were white.

Ghost did not startle when you entered the room. But when he looked up at you, taking what felt like hours to finally meet your gaze, you saw tears.

OR; after a mission goes sideways and several members of the team are hurt, you find Ghost and sit with him through a vulnerable moment, assuming you'd never speak of it again. Surprisingly, it turns into a routine of sorts, finding each other in the break room when insomnia grips you both, and you grow closer. Then a mission almost kills you, and everything changes

"You're not alone," Simon mutters carefully. "It takes a lot of bad shit to end up this… untouchable, I guess. Usually the toughest blokes in the room know the most 'bout what it's like being at rock bottom. You're not any less of a soldier because of what you've gone through, Sergeant, because you get back up every time."

    He meets your gaze again.

"You're not allowed to let 'em win, alright?" He says. "You're not allowed to die."
