In hindsight, if Gen had taken a little time to ruminate on it, it would’ve been obvious. The strange congratulations, the knowing looks, the way everyone seemed to assume that wherever Senku went, Gen would follow.
At the time, there had always been a perfectly reasonable explanation - always a reason. Until after almost two years, Gen finally realized he'd been missing the most obvious one of all.

Due to a strange pair of incense burners, Jinshi and Maomao meet inside of shared dreams. It takes them a while to realize that.

Or, the reunion between our favourite moon prince and his beloved apothecary in Season 2 Episode 46 was underwhelming, at least the scene itself. So I've taken it upon myself to make it a lot worse.
