Bucky did the decent thing - most of the time - after the incident. Keeping his distance where he could, not wanting to make the other man uncomfortable. But there were nights where he just couldn’t help himself, climbing up the fire escape like it was nothing, with a silky practiced ease that was all silence in the cover of the night. Tapped the window of Sam’s kitchen, the bedroom being too intimate now, presumptuous given all that had happened. Sam never seemed to be taken by surprise to see him out there, always resigned to his presence, slapping a friendly veneer over the overwhelming sense of caution, on his guard like he was ready for this to go wrong, end badly, bloody and tragic.
“Hi there, sweetheart,” Bucky purred out as Sam pushed the window open, “It’s been a while.”
“It has,” Sam agreed, regretful and tight, climbing onto his own countertop to sit next to the window, to be that much closer to Bucky.

Logan didn’t ask the man to elaborate, instead slipping a bottle of pills into his pocket, taking a plate of food that had long gone cold and a glass of water to go see if he could muster any interest in at least two out of three in Charles. It was a shame. What could either of them do.

Kal’s gotten less flighty, Batman’s critiques have become an expected and endearing quirk, and their post-battle arguments have ebbed from claws and teeth into something more like a post-battle eyeroll and knowing grin. Some would call this growth - a foray into friendship the likes of which Bruce Wayne has scarcely known - but, 235 days, 3 hours, and 22 minutes since their last blowout argument and Bruce is a veritable fish out of water.
