'Inanna's Descent into the Underworld' is one of the oldest stories ever recorded. Inanna (or Ishtar, as she will be known for the most part here) - Goddess of Love, Sex, Fertility, War and Ruler-ship - descends to the Underworld to take from her sister, Ereshkigal - Goddess of the Dead and Queen of the Underworld (known both as Irkalla or Kur)- power over the dead.
The story is a moral tale of greed, justice and responsibility, and a pseudo-scientific explanation of the seasons. The story survives in both older Sumerian and later Akkadian texts, and I have taken from both (as well as my own creative liberty) to tell my own version of the tale. Later tradition would also tie this story into the wider framework of The Epic of Gilgamesh, in which the catalyst of this story can be found. Despite its 5,000+ year old age, some of the themes of the tale are strikingly familiar to modern audiences, featuring everything from sisterly rivalries to zombie apocalypses.
This is a personal exercise in creative writing, and any constructive criticism is more than welcome. -
