Summary
The linoleum was cold, even through the thick blue hospital socks. Tenzō was thankful they had rubber grips on the bottom because his venture across the room to the bathroom was unsteady, to say the least. When had he ever in his life been assigned a hospital room this large?
Even in the darkness, his legs struck him as strangely pale, too long. He had regained almost all of the weight he lost during his capture, so why did his legs look thinner than he remembered? It all hinted at something that just couldn’t be—that just wouldn’t make any fucking sense. He burst into the bathroom, hand feeling along the wall for the switch. The light flicked on, so stinging bright he wanted to shut his eyes, but the face in the mirror wouldn’t allow it. No. He couldn’t shut his eyes now. Not when Hatake Kakashi was staring back at him.

Kakashi giggles next to him, his laugh quickly aborted in an aching whimper. “We are a quite pathetic pair of broken old men, aren’t we?” He says and Gai gasps at the offense.
“Talk for yourself Rival, I’m still in the primetime of my youth!”
There’s a slight arching of Kakashi’s brows. “Oh, is that so? That’s great! That way I’m sure you won’t mind hopping to the closet to get me my blindfold, will you?”
Gai doesn’t answer.
“Yeah, that’s what I thought too.”

Light pours in behind him: his silhouette standing there on the threshold of his own home like a vampire awaiting an invitation. She almost laughs at the sight. The man who cut the Devil to pieces is scared to follow after a woman with a chip on her shoulder? How far they’ve both fallen.
“It’s your house,” she points out.
Permission to enter. He does even though it’s not hers to give. It’s only a few steps, of course. Can’t break the rule. Five feet. Always five feet apart. The door closes.
She wants to break something. An old habit’s under heavy consideration.
