Summary
Anne Boonchuy knew just how moody mountain weather could get. She was a park ranger, after all. She wasn't made of sugar and no rain could ever make her melt.
And yet, when her siblings found themselves in peril on a hiking trail in the middle of a storm, she suddenly felt very, very small and helpless.
But what if something good were to come out of it in the end?

Summary
She hasn’t stepped out of the shadows yet, curiously watching the human boy – though he probably could be her age, if she aged in normal human years – as he rises shakily off of the floor, still leaning against the door. Then, in a way that shouldn’t be possible, his gaze lifts and finds her own.
Scary, despite herself, freezes in place.
“I’m sorry for intruding,” the human says, his tone breathy and high-pitched. “I needed a place my family couldn’t track me to. Is that alright?”
Reluctantly, Scary steps out of the shadows.

The sky blazed with the fire of Calamity, a bright beacon above grass-woven gravel trails and sun-grayed roads. Heart, Wit, and Strength were once more… Well, they’re on the same planet, at least.

Summary
You are Normal. You don’t know why this is so hard for your so-called friends to accept: there’s no reason why you wouldn’t be! If you’re acting different, it’s because they nearly burned down your house. Link doesn’t trust you. Taylor barely tolerates you. Scary… well, she’s made her distaste pretty clear. They don’t need you, so why do they think you need them?

Summary
Something is wrong with Normal.
At least, that’s what Scary thinks, but after everything, she doesn’t dare voice this. It’s bad enough that they let her back into their circle after the fight, bad enough that they insist on forgiving her– most of them, at least, she knows Taylor gives her mean looks behind her back. If she raises her voice about a suspicion she has that could possibly tear the group apart again, she just knows it’ll be the last straw, and then the last people she hasn’t managed to turn away will leave her, and it’ll be exactly what she deserves.
For once, she doesn’t think she wants that. She wants to stay here. But that means she has to keep her observations to herself.
Something, she thinks, is wrong with Normal.

Summary
Deep beneath Newtopia's shadow, poured into vein-twisting tunnels far from the sun and vaster than a dozen cities, the Night slept.
Or, rather, it used to. The Host sleeps on in her suspended state, and the Night in turn is awake. And it is hunting, feeding from the terror-soaked psyche and leaving madness bleeding in its wake.
It is hunting her.
But Sasha has a purpose, down there. Find the Source. Hunt it. End it. Find Marcy. The real Marcy, not the ghost-echo visions that Sasha isn't sure were from the mythopoeiac tunnel-god or from her own Night-gnawed reality.

Summary
Night knows not, neither is it shown to day,
By sunlight nor by starlight is it shown,
Nor to the full moon's eye nor footfall known,
Their world's untrodden and unkindled way.Sasha was meant to die in the labyrinth beneath what remained of Newtopia’s streets. Marcy was meant to anchor the Night into this world.
Neither of those things happen how they were supposed to.

Summary
Something’s different this time. That’s not right.
There’s something crawling up her spine and she shivers against the stabbing frost of fear. Her hair stands on its ends as clouds of smoke swirl around her, she’s trapped in the eye of a tornado. She sinks to her knees without her knowledge.
Large swaths of it begin to coalesce in front of her, stacking itself particle by particle into a replica of her shadow, before opening eleven ember stained eyes to stare at her.

Summary
“You can have this,” the false image of Anne says, voice comforting and sweet, mimicking the familiarity of one long-loved, “Marcy, we can have this.”
You feel sick, at the sound of your own name.
“I can’t,” you say, though the words feel false on your tongue. Pre-written. Following the script of a scene long rehearsed. Time and time again, endless.
“Why not?” She-He-They-It asks.
“Because you’re not real.”

Summary
“Oh, that’s enough of that,” the court magician scoffs, and when Nova peeks at her again, she’s scowling, a strange look on her; Nova’s only seen her in court, flitting around with a smug grin that never seemed to leave her face. “So, Sasha wants you guys to tail me, huh?”
“She is worried about your safety,” Milo says very seriously. “It is an honor to accompany you on your business to Lilyvale, Gleaming Moon.”
The captain’s wife only wrinkles her nose in distaste, and she flicks her wrist, motioning them all forwards.

**MAJOR SPOILERS for The Hardest Thing and the rest of Amphibia**
The Three-Stones-Deity is not infallible. In ten thousand years of existence, only once had someone used their stones for good. That lone person had further still proved their thinking flawed upon being offered what was essentially godhood. They had even undershot their corporeal representation by a few decades for Frog’s sake. So it was not exactly a surprise when there was a minor hiccup with returning Anne Boonchuy to Amphibia. As promised, the Three-Stones-Deity did return her to the world she loved so dearly, but then why was it so different than she remembered? Remnants of the Core are not raining down on Amphibia. Her closest friends and frog family are nowhere to be seen when they were surely gathered around her just moments ago. Newtopia has been fully rebuilt… and it’s five years later?!
Or, the Three-Stones-Deity messed up when sending Anne back to Amphibia. Instead of returning her immediately, they accidentally placed her five years into the future.

Summary
It’s almost easier, this job, than any at the hospital. At least here, Anne knows that her patients are going to die, and she doesn’t have to torment herself about being the possible cause. At least this way, she knows she’s giving them a wonderful end, writing their final chapter so that they can go without a single want or need.
But Marcy complicates that.

Summary
“Wow, these can fly so far,” Anne gushed, running a hand through short, yet curly hair as she picked up the latest paper airplane that Marcy had thrown. “Make another one, Mar-mar! I’m gonna try and catch it!”
“Why would you try and catch it?” Marcy asked, only a bit disgruntled. To stop the airplane mid-flight would make the distance it traveled shorter, and she’d been folding pieces of paper non-stop to get the paper airplane to fly forever.
Anne simply grinned with a wide and toothy smile, “To make sure it doesn’t crash, of course! Then, you don’t have to make paper airplanes every time you wanna throw them ‘cuz I’ll throw it back to you.”

Summary
Anne is taller than her, if only by a few inches, and she’s chuckling as Marcy wobbles precariously. “Marcy is a pretty name,” she says, offering a blinding smile. “Well, Marcy, don’t you worry one bit; I’ll wrap that ankle up and then you definitely won’t press charges against me, right?”
“Don’t worry,” Marcy teases, “I don’t press charges against pretty girls.”
Anne just laughs, and with Marcy’s bag slung over her shoulder and her arm supporting Marcy’s weight, Marcy relaxes, most of her tension just melting away– she’s definitely had worse encounters with people she was supposed to have killed five minutes prior.

Summary
Anne has always taken that in stride, equally happy to hold Marcy’s hands or tug her into an embrace– like now, where they’re all tangled together, and Anne has an arm around Marcy’s shoulders, absent-mindedly tracing circles into the small of Marcy’s back while Marcy listens to the thump-thump-thump of Anne’s heartbeat under her ear.
This is nice. Peaceful, in a way that life so rarely is. High school has dragged them apart, and with Marcy’s schedule loaded to oblivion and Anne helping her parents around the clock constantly, they haven’t had much of a chance to breathe.
So here Marcy is now, breathing for the first time in too long– she’s finally on solid ground again.
