Summary
“We should have sex,” Kaoru says resolutely, propping himself on the table next to where Kyoya has carefully laid out his work. It’s loud enough to be a proclamation but quiet enough to not disturb Haruhi, Hikaru, and Tamaki as they begin to make their way to Music Room 3’s doors.
Kyoya stills, hands hovering over the keyboard of his laptop. His lack of response would have normal people believe Kyoya didn't hear the comment, or perhaps they would believe his lack of enthusiasm is an indication to drop the subject. That would be a normal person’s response.
But, well. Kaoru isn't exactly normal.

Rumors float through the tabloids constantly of Hitachiin Kaoru being a serial “first-date”r; taking one hot model, business man, or some other person out only to drop them immediately. People talk about how he must be a fickle lover and enjoys going through men like tissues, blowing his way through them and then leaving.
Not that Kyoya listens to such nonsense. No, what he mainly listens to is Kaoru ranting to him every time one of these horrible dates falls through, chattering on the phone about all of his suitors' many many faults.
One thing remains certain about such rumors - they never, nor could ever - discover how Kaoru truly spends his evenings.

Cuffs stay on til you sort your shit out, whether that’s making up or deciding to go your separate ways.”
“That’s a fuckin’ ridiculous idea,” Ed snaps, because he can’t contradict the angry, sad, horny descriptor. Boy’s got that part down pretty accurate.
“Yes, it is!” Stede says. “Where on earth did you come up with something like that?”
Frenchie jumps in to answer this one. “Buttons told us a story about his mum tying him and his little sister together when they’d fight, til they made up.”
“Oh, and we take advice on interpersonal relations from whatever ocean-dwelling cryptid raised Buttons now, do we?”

Kaoru ends up telling Kyoya about Alice, and the world on the other side of the mirror. Looking Glass, he corrects himself, and speaks of rooms quite like here, only the paintings in them talking, the clocks with faces. All wonders, he adds, laughing at himself, remembering Hikaru, ten years old, eyes huge and the future like Humpty Dumpty in their clasped hands –- as if, the moment they let go, it would break like an egg.
“In other words, you’re scared,” Kyoya says, and Kaoru wants to throw something at him. Another difference and he doesn’t want it –- wants him and Hikaru to be the same, neither of them hesitating before they make a leap, say a word, take a step.
Or, Kaoru, Kyoya, and the love story they never asked for.

My word, that is just—well, a poor example of parenting, if you ask me.” He rocked the sobbing babe in his arms, his eyes trained on Ed. “We should have the crew pick this house over very thoroughly. Serves them right, abandoning a little baby. I think I saw a silver service in the kitchen; make sure they nab that.”

There are shouts up above, on deck, to haul in the ropes and unfurl the sails. Soon enough, she can feel the ship move all around them. The gentle floating motion deepens into a steady rocking, and the sound of the waves overwhelms the voices. She wishes desperately to hear them. Everyone on deck must be busy setting the course, now! But if everyone’s on deck… There’s probably no one in the hallways. Alma could sneak up and get one last look for the night, see them actually pirating. Then she’ll go right back to bed. Promise!
