Summary
Katniss Everdeen has spent years disliking Peeta Mellark, and she has no plans to change that now, even if quitting the mines has left her desperate for work and out of options. Unfortunately, the only job available in District 12 is in his house.
Becoming Peeta’s housekeeper is supposed to be temporary: earn enough to keep the lights on, ignore the infuriatingly kind man she still remembers as a smug merchant boy, and leave with her pride intact. It should be simple.
But Peeta isn’t anything like she remembers. As domestic arguments turn into reluctant trust, unexpected jealousy, hidden paintings, and the slow unraveling of a misunderstanding that began when they were sixteen, Katniss starts to realize she may have spent years hating someone who never deserved it.
Even more inconveniently, Peeta may have spent all those years loving her.

If the star crossed lovers from district 12 never went into the games, if they were never pitted against each other, doomed to fight and kill each other, if their stars weren’t crossed at all, what would have happened anyway?
Keeping Katniss's family fed without tesserae is not easy and Peeta's parents are pushing him to marry a merchant girl as soon as possible. The best way to escape starvation and a prison of a marriage is to marry each other, but that would require Katniss to let go of a promise she made to herself a long time ago, to never marry anyone.

The effect Katniss can have on people, even now, swollen with child and waddling around the kitchen, preparing Gale’s coffee, is truly maddening.
“Here.” Katniss places a tray with a steaming pot of coffee, three mugs, a small pitcher of milk, and a bowl of brown sugar on the table in the living room. “Make it how you like it. There’s no caffeine, though. My mother warned me against it until after I have the baby.”
“How is your mother?” Gale asks, plopping himself on the sofa and reaching for the coffee pot. He pours himself a mug and watches the steam curl towards the ceiling. “She still in Four?”
“Yes, and she’s going to retire soon. She and I talk often on the telephone. She’s very happy there. I even have a stepfather, but I haven’t met him yet since they just got married. His name’s Marlin.”
“I never thought she’d replace your father.”
“She didn’t replace my father, Gale. She’s just building something new with someone else.” Katniss finally manages to sit in an armchair after some maneuvering. She sighs loudly. “And…what about Hazelle?”

“If it weren’t for… what what?” Caesar prompts.
“If it weren’t for the baby.”
And nothing could have prepared her for that.
The only reason Katniss regrets that night from four months ago is because of everything that came after. The pain she caused him, when he realized it wasn’t real, just like everything else about their relationship. The way he pretended she didn’t exist, for months after the second victory tour. But specifically this part, where she’s being forced back into a death arena while four months pregnant. It would make her inevitable death so much easier to accept if that night had never happened.
Peeta isn’t supposed to know. So why is he telling Caesar, and all of Panem, on national television?
OR: the fic where Everlark aren’t together yet, Katniss is pregnant during the Quarter Quell, Peeta isn’t supposed to know but then figures it out, Peeta never gets taken by the Capital and hijacked, and they try to live their “happily ever after”.
