“Cooper!” Charlie cried in relief, Cooper stood in shock looking at him. Charlie was from Vermont, and they hadn’t met up for what felt like years.
Charlie wore a strange amalgamation of clothing. Two pairs of jeans, a large puffy jacket that reached to his thighs, a beanie that wrapped around his head, and thick gloves.
Perfect clothing for an especially snowy day in Vermont.
But he was in California, in August.
You don’t wear that in August.

Summary
Joshua Schlatt dared his friends to go in the woods because he knew most of them were scared of the dark trees and the rumors of the insane asylum and testing facility on the other side.
In those very woods, they meet two boys in the woods. Their names were Nine and Ten, but the group calls them Charlie and Travis.
These boys aren't quite like any weird boys you'd find in the woods.
Because as Ted puts it, "They got fucking powers! Like goddamn Avatar or Marvel!"

It’s a joke, so Charlie laughs. “Man, I get it. It’s a long way from home for me, too.”
“Yeah,” Schlatt says. His voice cracks. “Yeah. At least I’ll have you guys, though. I’ll be fine.”
“Right,” Charlie says. “We’ll be fine.”
Schlatt’s quiet. The blinds rustle again. “It’s fuckin’ snowing,” comes his broken voice. “Charlie.”
“I know,” Charlie swallows. “I -“
“It’s July,” Schlatt says. “God, Charlie. It’s July.”
