mike sighed. “i’m in love with you!” he blabbered, slapping a hand over his mouth as soon as the words left.
will raised his eyebrows in shock. he was frozen, he couldn’t move, he felt numb.
just as will was about to come back to his senses, mike quickly planted a kiss to his lips, making will gasp sharply.
“i know i’ve been gone for so long. but, if it weren’t for me moving away, i wouldn’t have known about how i felt about you.” mike whispered, holding will’s cheek. “i know you felt this way for me too when we were younger.”
will blinked and pulled mike’s hand away from his face. “mike, you’re too fucking late.” he said softly, angry tears running down his flared cheeks.

“Sure you don’t want to play, Mike?” asks an out-of-breath Will before he drinks from a water bottle he brought.
“I’m fine,” he mumbles.
“He’d probably trip on his shoelaces anyway,” Lucas laughs, barely out of breath, drinking from the bottle Will handed him.
Mike hears Max scoff at his side and Lucas shoots her the biggest smile he can probably ever put on his face before he reaches her to kiss her cheek, and Mike rolls his eyes internally before Will comes a little closer, leaning towards him.
“You ok?”
“Yeah, sure.” And when Will obviously shows that he doesn’t believe him he adds: “Just a little bored I guess.”
He barely sees the hurt in his best friend’s eyes before he turns to Dustin.
“He’s thinking too much.”
“What about?” Will asks, but he keeps his gaze on Mike.
“I don’t know, it’s just annoying.”Or, three months after everything, the Party tries to move on and figure out what to do next while it’s sunny outside, but not in their mind.

There was no malice to his tone - no disgust, or humor. He remained cautious: putting words into Will’s mouth with traces of hopes for him to spit them out, instead of swallowing.
Will shrugged back. He didn’t know what to say. He didn’t know if there was a right answer, but there was almost always a wrong one with stuff like that. So, he didn’t say a thing. He’d rather be spoon-fed a little longer until he was certain what Mike was thinking.

It’s been a long day.
Will Byers thinks it might possibly have been the longest day of his entire life so far. (He’s purposefully choosing to disregard his week in the upside down. Also his other week being possessed. Those don’t count. No other bad day would stand a chance against those ones, and that’s not fair.)
One more time he fluffs the navy blue sleeping bag he’s pulled out of storage, shaking out the slightly musty smell. Not that Mike’s ever minded little things like that. Mike’s slept on the floor, slept in a hospital chair when Will needed him.
Not that things are… quite like that, anymore.
