Draco stepped forward before he even realized what he was doing, fingers already reaching for the wand tucked into his healer’s robes. Then the man shifted, blinking up at him, and Draco froze.

It was only a rather small gap, but a careful hand could easily have placed another name between Harry and the next student. In some other life, Professor McGonagall's keen eye would have caught this small oddity, but in this one, any possible thoughts and suspicions were erased from the witch's mind before they could even appear.

“Maybe it’s just somewhere good, and he doesn’t want to leave there.” Crystal interjected hopefully, gazing down at Edwin’s unconscious form.
“I doubt that bloody witch would send him somewhere nice, not after we broke her coven to the four winds. Even if she did though, there is nowhere good enough that would stop Edwin wanting to come back to me. Nah. He’d always come back to me.” There was a fierceness in Charles’ voice, but Crystal felt her expression soften. It must be nice, she thought, to have someone you believed in so vehemently. To have a love so true you never questioned it.

“Charles!” Crystal huffed, bringing his attention back to the phone call. A couple of teaspoons should be enough, anyway. He shook it directly into the simmering pot, setting the container aside to grab his phone before it slipped into the curry.
“Okay, I’m here, I’m here, hold onto your horses, Crys. What’s going on?”
“Jesus, what’s going on?” Okay, he did not sound like that. “Edwin is leaving.”
What.
“What,” he said, disbelief lacing his voice, causing a sharp huff of laughter. But he didn't really take Crystal to be the joking type, not for this. “What do you mean, leaving?”
“As in top-secret filming project that he's flying out for in a couple hours. And no Charles, this is different. It’s in goddamn America. He told Niko that she can’t come visit which means you can’t come visit which means he’s being so utterly stupid about this."

They’ve been working their way up to this slowly. As Charles pointed out, they have forever, and, well, Edwin gets overwhelmed. In his defense, he’d existed for almost 130 years without really experiencing lust. It was a lot.
But they’re here now. Edwin is on his back, trembling, on a bed they’d acquired just for this because Charles insisted on doing it right. The trembling is less to do with feeling like his atoms are going to fly apart because surely he wasn’t made to be able to feel this good, and more to do with the fact that Charles has been fingering him for an approximate decade.

Edwin shifts, kneading his fists together and avoiding Charles' gaze.
"You make it sound as though it is such a terrible thing, Charles," he says stiffly yet with a distinct sincerity. "It is not. That I could provide any comfort to you at all is something I am deeply grateful for. I do not and have never required you to love me in the-in the way I love you."
He meets Charles' eyes again, so terribly determined and kind. It makes Charles want to scream and hit something.

The thing is, while Edwin appreciates Charles’ chivalry in pretending it’s nothing more than a bit of snow, the fact of the matter is that it’s a lot more than that. The whole wretched business started two weeks ago when they were breaking into an abandoned witch’s workshop, and Charles broke a little glass bottle labelled, ominously, The Shove. Edwin had opened his mouth to warn Charles, but he wasn’t quick enough, and they both caught a faceful of chalky, overpoweringly rose-scented powder that made Edwin sneeze for the time since 1916. He had hoped that time might have diminished its efficacy, but it wasn’t long before the effects began to make themselves known. Over the last two weeks, it’s become clear that not only is the spell still quite functional, but it appears to be contriving to put them in—Edwin feels hotly embarrassed all over to think of it—romantic situations.
