Summary
When the campus newspaper, La Liberté, starts publishing articles critical of the university administration, Public Safety Officer Javert bans the club from meeting on campus. The staff, who call themselves Les Amis de l'ABC, begin meeting at a café run by Éponine Thénardier, where Editor in Chief Enjolras gets to know the cynical barista Grantaire. Meanwhile, tensions rise between Officer Javert and Student Union Liaison Madeleine, who defends the radical students (and might be harboring a criminal past).

Javert's soul is preserved by and trapped in the Seine — and the surviving characters who were unhappy enough to encounter him in life might be so unfortunate as to meet him again.
