Summary
Chloe had to be okay. It was like the rules of the universe. She was perfect, so nothing bad could happen to her. Like in all the fairytales.
“No,” Ella says. “She’s–” Ella choked again. “She’s gone.”
Red had spent enough time in Auradon by then to know that gone doesn’t just mean away. Gone was a kinder way of saying dead.
It didn’t feel kind, though. It still felt like a suckerpunch.

“Why would she be disappointed in you for this?” Red asks, sounding genuinely confused.
“Well–” Chloe feels tears stinging at her eyes. “She’s told me her and dad’s love story so many times. She always talks about how she wants that for me. I don’t know how to tell her I’ll never have that.”
There are tears falling down her face now, but she wipes at them quickly and doesn’t turn around. She doesn’t want Red to see her cry.

Maybe invite the special lady in your life?”
“Oh, I’m a God-fearing Christian woman, sir,” Agatha says, slipping into her best Southern drawl. “I was just on my way to the M&M store in Times Square and got awful lost. Those drag queens sure are funny, though. If they wanna damn themselves to an eternity of hellfire, lord knows they’ll look fabulous doing it, am I right? Slay!”
