Summary
Canon Backstory slightly adjusted.
The Druids recognized Merlin as the prophesized Emrys when he was still a very small child, and have serious expectations for the boy. Merlin's father comes back to Ealdor after they track him down and tell him about his son's destiny. Balinor tries his best to give his son the Lord's upbringing and education that he had as a boy, feeling that Merlin deserves it even if the Druids have the wrong kid. It turns out Balinor was right to fear the attention he would bring to Ealdor. When he goes to Camelot, Merlin fully expects to become an apprentice physician and does not pretend to be a simpleton or instantly accept people thinking that he is one because of this change in his upbringing. Arthur isn't blind, but he doesn't pay much attention to Merlin's quirks until King Bayard's visit.

Arthur woke up. This was a shock since he last remembered a sword being pushed through his stomach.
(Arthur experiences a time loop after a noble successfully kills him. Anytime he dies, he wakes up the morning of the arrival of his would-be murderer. As the loops continue, the secrets he learns begin to stack up, and there's enough to shatter what he believes about his family, his life, who he loves, and what his duty is to Camelot. Summary
In the midst of capturing a magical creature, Merlin is transported to a world where Camelot is home to thousands of magic-users. King Uther is nowhere to be found, Arthur is a prince again, and Queen Ygraine sits on the throne.
Merlin plans to get back to his own reality, to his own Camelot. To do that, however, he must have access to information that is inside a shielded castle protected by powerful sorcerers. The only way in is to participate in the Apprentice Exam and be an apprentice to a magic-user included in Camelot's court. Should be easy . . . right?
Conspiracies are afoot and Merlin just knows that, somehow, he is or will be involved. Just his luck.
