Summary
A new mutation appears on Simon out of nowhere, so he tries to hide it from Grace: covering up, avoiding him, refusing to come to bed. Finally, Grace has enough and confronts Simon, only to be met with an astonishing sight.
A sharp-toothed maw on Simon's stomach, gnashing its fangs.
———
"Simon. Darling."
Another pause.
"Yes, angel…?" Simon said through his shirt.
"What is that?"
One more pause.
"….mouth."
"No—I can see that, but, like…wh…how…what?"

Summary
Simon's eyes sharply cut up to meet his, his glare burning as he briefly paused undoing buttons. Ryland's grin was still plastered to his face and he knew it was only serving to get under Simon's skin.
"You think wearing those to a meeting was just 'same old, same old?'" He pointedly lowered his gaze to Ryland's pants, and—yeah, okay, maybe they were a size smaller than he usually wore but they still fit. "And that stunt you pulled dropping your pencil?"
"What!" A light laugh made his words stutter out of him. "I dropped my pencil! You wanted me to just leave it on the ground?"
Or Simon and Ryland both work on Project Hail Mary. Inevitably, they like to rile each other up, and Simon doesn’t like sharing. Surely fucking your hot coworker is fine as long as it’s behind closed doors. Right?

Summary
Somehow, in some twisted, unbelievable turn of events, the fate of the entire planet, billions upon billions of people, had fallen on Ryland Grace's shoulders. It was a burden he wasn't fit to carry. A burden that he could feel in all its massiveness weighing down on his chest, squeezing his lungs until all he could eke out of them where wheezing, barely-there breaths.
He pressed his forehead harder against his knees and curled his fingers tight around some of the fabric of his pants, his knuckles turning white. He couldn't—this wasn't how it was supposed to—
His life—his kids—
Simon.
Or Ryland Grace is a middle school teacher turned lead astrophage scientist. Simon Fischer is a convict turned engineering specialist. Surely absolutely nothing could go wrong on a cosmic scale because neither of them are astronauts.

Summary
"Anomaly Simon very friendly toward 'little rocks' but frequently forgets Eridians fully sentient and capable medical professionals, statement."
Grace parses that. "He's not taking you seriously when you talk to him?"
"Keeps trying to hug nurses, statement. Upsetting. Upsetting."
