Grace choked for the second time. He really should learn to stop sipping around Rocky. Simon froze in place, glaring over his shoulder at Rocky. And then at Grace, for taking too long to say no.
“No way in hell,” Simon finally answered, eyes narrowed.
“Is for science!” Rocky repeated, like that was supposed to mean something.
OR: Eridians have no concept of casual sex. Rocky walks in on Simon and Grace, and wants to learn more. Y'know, for science!

“And you have the cure to what caused my people to fight with another space station... I could teach you. How to fight, that is.”

"Then hurry up and fix it if you want me gone," Simon retorts, his jaw ticking."I don't know how."
Simon, who's clearly lost his patience, leans forward and hisses, "Then we're obviously fucking stuck with each other."

Simon's eyes sharply cut up to meet his, his glare burning as he briefly paused undoing buttons. Ryland's grin was still plastered to his face and he knew it was only serving to get under Simon's skin.
"You think wearing those to a meeting was just 'same old, same old?'" He pointedly lowered his gaze to Ryland's pants, and—yeah, okay, maybe they were a size smaller than he usually wore but they still fit. "And that stunt you pulled dropping your pencil?"
"What!" A light laugh made his words stutter out of him. "I dropped my pencil! You wanted me to just leave it on the ground?"
Or Simon and Ryland both work on Project Hail Mary. Inevitably, they like to rile each other up, and Simon doesn’t like sharing. Surely fucking your hot coworker is fine as long as it’s behind closed doors. Right?

Somehow, in some twisted, unbelievable turn of events, the fate of the entire planet, billions upon billions of people, had fallen on Ryland Grace's shoulders. It was a burden he wasn't fit to carry. A burden that he could feel in all its massiveness weighing down on his chest, squeezing his lungs until all he could eke out of them where wheezing, barely-there breaths.
He pressed his forehead harder against his knees and curled his fingers tight around some of the fabric of his pants, his knuckles turning white. He couldn't—this wasn't how it was supposed to—
His life—his kids—
Simon.
Or Ryland Grace is a middle school teacher turned lead astrophage scientist. Simon Fischer is a convict turned engineering specialist. Surely absolutely nothing could go wrong on a cosmic scale because neither of them are astronauts.

What a joke.

He slowly approaches the viewing window, afraid to move too quickly and startle whatever lurks on the other side. The acrylic curves with the wall, bowing away from him. Nearly imperceptible particles drift in the water, reminding Grace of marine snow. He gets the sudden, wild urge to press his palm flat against the barrier.
Before he gets the chance, something disturbs the water. It’s fast, only giving Grace a moment to take it in before it disappears. Pointed spines punctuate a long, snaking body. A flash of red as the artificial lights reflect off something, like a cat’s eyeshine in the dark.
