Lute froze, the tip of her spear pressing lightly against the skin of the sinner’s throat.
It stared up at her with wide, horrified, hopeful yellow eyes. Now that she actually looked, she couldn’t deny that she would have known them in any lifetime. The shape of his face was the same. The hair was the same. The voice was the same. But—
The creature before her had one more eye than it should have. It had horns growing out of its head — the same shape that the ones on his helmet had been, but real in a way that no angel’s were. Knives grew from the tips of its fingers, impossible to be covered even by the gloves it wore.
The thing in front of her was undoubtedly a demon.
Adam had been an angel.
Adam was dead.

“Adam?”
“How the fuck do you know my name!?” the sinner demands, waving the broken pipe threateningly.
That is all Lute needs. She steps forward, not by choice, but out of a deep, all-consuming need.
She is met by a bark of, “Stay back, bitch!”
That is when Lute realizes what is wrong with this situation, apart from the obvious. Her body freezes in tandem with her heart, and slowly, she says, “Adam, it's me. You recognize me, right?”

Or; Lute gets Adam back in the form of a sinner with no memory of who he used to be. But it's fine, she can fix him.

She raises her spear to point down at his throat. “You know you won’t come back this time, right?”
“Oh, I fucking know. You’re good at making sure sinners don’t come back. Bet you miss it, right? I mean, you know what? Why the fuck not.” He stands up and spreads his arms out wide. “Go on, Vajjie. Show me why you’re one of the best.”
