Summary

Yoshiki kept his head down and stared at his clasped hands, struggling to stay present. The 5:30 morning train to the prefecture’s capital had been the earliest one they could find.
“Hey,” Hikaru whispered from beside him, “you think this plan will work?”
Yoshiki frowned, pressing down on his knuckles with his fingers. Despite wearing a long sleeved shirt, his newest gnarly scar was clearly visible on his hand, covering most of it. He still couldn't get used to it. “If it doesn’t, we’re both as good as dead, so…”

When the mysterious company makes a move against Hikaru, he and Yoshiki are forced to flee Kubitachi, becoming a part of a plan that isn't even their own. Blindly putting their trust in Tanaka and accepting his help, the two run off to Tokyo. Things don't go how they expected. Both boys are forced to survive in an unknown environment as Hikaru is being hunted, keeping secrets from each other (and themselves) while struggling with inner turmoil.
Underneath it all, what keeps them going is their quest for acceptance and understanding.

The door didn't fully shut behind Yoshiki after he left. The crack allowed a stripe of light to slice through the otherwise dark room.
Hikaru turned on his side, toward the door. The light stopped just short of him.
"Yoshiki..." Hikaru's fingers stretched along the floor. They clasped around the light, the action only illuminating his dirtied knuckles and short nails. The very depths of himself ached with something he was so tired of having to feel. "...I've been starving."

Yoshiki could accept that his best friend was no longer his best friend, but merely something else. Something that should be inhumane and wrong and filthy, but his. Yoshiki could cope just fine. As long as Hikaru kept looking at him with those bright eyes and did those stupid impressions and promised to come bother him in Tokyo. As long as he greeted him in the mornings before school and they could continue to text about the newest additions of Master Master and Hikaru promised not to leave.
He didn't care what this version of Hikaru really was. Hikaru's here and he's staying.
Yoshiki would make sure of it.
