    After over a year of tension and aggression towards the interloper in his Pack, Damian realizes the reason his father brought Drake into their orbit. Timothy Drake, freshly presented as an Omega, is not here to be the replacement son his father actually wanted, no Drake is here as a ward to be groomed as Damian's future mate. He finds himself less offended by the concept than expected.

    In which Tim is reeling at Damian's attitude change and wary but not adverse, Damian has the wrong (?) idea about what is going on here and is determined to initiate an appropriate courtship of his intended, and Bruce is just relieved that Damian is returning home and thoroughly ignoring the way his two sons have started circling each other for his own mental health.

    But Bruce only smiled—a weak, sad smile, heavy with resignation, knowing he had little time left.

    I felt my heart shatter into a thousand pieces. Bruce gave him a kiss, but Clark felt his lips were cold—a pang of anguish that left him breathless.

    ​"Don't say that. You aren't going to die," his voice broke, the words coming out in a pleading whisper. "I promise you're going to be okay, but please, don't close your eyes."

    ​He pulled him tighter against his chest and began to return to Earth as if his embrace could bring him back to life, as if his love were enough to save him. But Bruce, with a sweetness that tore at his soul, gave a slight shake of his head. His thumb brushed Clark's cheek in one last attempt at comfort; his lips parted to say something more, but the sound never came.
