Summary
In September 1979, things are coming along for the March-Healy household quite nicely. (Get it, Nicely). But when Holland and Jackson answer a mysterious summons from a university professor, they are once again embroiled in intrigue and death. This time they are a long way from home, with no friendly faces to help them out – well, except maybe one. Will the Nice Guys be able to tell friend from foe, or will they be swept up in the avalanche heading their way?
A/N: This work is complete and will be updated roughly every three days. Since posting my first work in the Nice Guys fandom, I have wanted to do a longer-style fic for them. Literallyawolf commented that they wanted to see a longer fic too, and I guess I may as well give it a go!(Disclaimer: I do not own The Nice Guys (2016) and am making no money from this fic. I have also chosen to use the names of real people for fun historical references. I do not suggest that the views, actions, and opinions of the RLCs mirror the people in reality. RLCs will be credited in end-notes or in the final credits of the fic where it is appropriate. This is a work of fiction.)

“He had a sharp nose and head with full, healthy hair, and was dressed in a white button-up shirt that looked crisp and too tight on his body, with slacks hanging low on narrow hips. There was stubble along his jaw and exhaustion beneath his eyes despite the well-kept mustache and soft blue tint of his irises, but somehow neither of those things took away from him. If anything, they added something unfairly charming. He smelled faintly of cheap cologne and cigarette smoke, and something sweeter underneath that reminded Healy vaguely of oranges.
Healy frowned when he noticed that the man’s blond hair was exactly the same shade of June’s usual beehive hairdo.”

To take the private investigator exam you needed 6000 hours of logged experience working directly under someone already licensed. Holland March thought he'd be annoyed at needing to supervise every one of those hours for Jackson Healy, but he's finding himself much more appreciative of his partner's company than he expected.
But acknowledging the depth of those feelings is also unburying some ugly history from March's younger years as a policeman with the LAPD, when he learned what was needed to survive as a cop.
Can he break down some of his painfully taught defense mechanisms enough to risk finding something deeper with Healy? Can he ever feel safe enough to realise feelings deliberately crushed down for more than a decade? Or is realising this potential connection worth it all?

Summary
Blackmail. Illegal porn. Undercover at a gay bar. The Nice Guys sure are at it again.
“Porn? I can throw a rock in this neighborhood and I’m gonna break the window of a porn store.”
March gestured anxiously, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Healy paused. “Ohhhhh. The nasty stuff. Whips and handcuffs. Girls and animals.”
“Close,” March said, grimacing. He really, really didn’t want to have to explain this. “Think more like…. Disco.”
“Disco?” Healy raised an eyebrow. “What, like the queer music? You think the back room of that store is full of porn for… For disco fans.” He nodded thoughtfully a couple of times. “And you’re an expert about this?”
For a second the whole world went white around the edges and March thought he might pass out. He was too sober for this conversation. What exactly had Healy noticed that morning, how obvious exactly had his full-body reaction to Healy’s hand on his neck been? “I was a happily married man!” March said, and as soon as it came out of his mouth he knew it was wrong. Too fast, too high-pitched, too loud.
