At nine, Defense Against the Dark Arts would start. Then Charms. Homework would pile up like a wall I couldn't climb.
My curse research, the only fight that mattered, would have to be squeezed into stolen moments: free periods, late nights, the breaks between rounds at Crossed Wands. I needed every second I could steal before the juggling act began.
From the corner of my eye, someone's feet. Black shoes, scuffed at the edges. I figured Imelda, always hunting for another pawn, was about to shanghai me into her next chess match. But my name never came. Impatient, I tossed the book into a nearby armchair.
"Can I help you?"
It wasn't Imelda. Not even close. This could be none other than the nameless fifth year.
She carried that rare voltage I'd only felt once before. When I met Ominis. A stranger's face, taut with significance. Destined to be important.
I didn't want to look like a fool. Not now, not with her.
Don't screw this up, Sallow.
My voice came out with a lilt I didn't recognize, too bright for the shadows in my head:
"Ah. You're the new fifth year. I'm Sebastian Sallow. Welcome to Hogwarts."

Spoon clattering as Sebastian stood, taking a breath as he approached her in the doorway.
The stride slow, pointed. Each step an edict.
Up close, he was both more familiar and more alien. Chin dusted with stubble.
Azkaban left fingerprints on him in ways she was still counting.
His eyes were alight with justification. Presented in a low, knowing voice:
"…I think you owe me now, don't you. Since apparently, if not for sheer dumb luck, I'd still be rotting in the cell you and Ominis put me in."
Cara closed her eyes. Tasted metal. "Don't say that."
But Sebastian knew he'd played the winning hand.
She could hear it in the way his voice softened; how he let the silence stretch just enough to burrow under her skin.
"Too late. You don't get to worry about me now, Officer. But if I find any leads, I'll let you know. We know where to find each other."
She inhaled sharply, mind breeding nightmare scenarios like doxies in the dark. Each wilder than the last.
"Fine. But don't overstep."
"Wouldn't dream of it."

If you picked this up in search of scandal, heroics, or the sort of high drama that leaves readers breathless, do yourself a favor and put it right back down. You've gravely overestimated both the contents and their author.
Still here? I have to ask: are you missing a chromosome (not that there's anything wrong with that) or simply a glutton for disappointment?
You'll find no insight into the grand mysteries of Hogwarts here, you know. Merely a catalogue of the everyday, recorded by one whose chief contribution to the school is not bumping (too often) into the furniture.
If this somehow still qualifies as a page turner, by all means, proceed. I suppose I can't actually stop you.
But Sebastian, if you're reading this, do have the decency to refrain from scrawling in the margins. I fear the world is not yet ready for the annotated edition.
