    Summary

At nine, Defense Against the Dark Arts would start. Then Charms. Homework would pile up like a wall I couldn't climb.

My curse research, the only fight that mattered, would have to be squeezed into stolen moments: free periods, late nights, the breaks between rounds at Crossed Wands. I needed every second I could steal before the juggling act began.

From the corner of my eye, someone's feet. Black shoes, scuffed at the edges. I figured Imelda, always hunting for another pawn, was about to shanghai me into her next chess match. But my name never came. Impatient, I tossed the book into a nearby armchair.

    "Can I help you?"

It wasn't Imelda. Not even close. This could be none other than the nameless fifth year.

She carried that rare voltage I'd only felt once before. When I met Ominis. A stranger's face, taut with significance. Destined to be important.

I didn't want to look like a fool. Not now, not with her.

    Don't screw this up, Sallow.

My voice came out with a lilt I didn't recognize, too bright for the shadows in my head:

"Ah. You're the new fifth year. I'm Sebastian Sallow. Welcome to Hogwarts."

Exactly what it says on the tin. Modern AU where our faves are still at Hogwarts but have smartphones and are tuned into pop culture in a clever way. I regret nothing.

    Summary

    "And if I'm honest…"

Spoon clattering as Sebastian stood, taking a breath as he approached her in the doorway.

The stride slow, pointed. Each step an edict.

Up close, he was both more familiar and more alien. Chin dusted with stubble.

Azkaban left fingerprints on him in ways she was still counting.

His eyes were alight with justification. Presented in a low, knowing voice:

"…I think you owe me now, don't you. Since apparently, if not for sheer dumb luck, I'd still be rotting in the cell you and Ominis put me in."

Cara closed her eyes. Tasted metal. "Don't say that."

But Sebastian knew he'd played the winning hand.

She could hear it in the way his voice softened; how he let the silence stretch just enough to burrow under her skin.

"Too late. You don't get to worry about me now, Officer. But if I find any leads, I'll let you know. We know where to find each other."

She inhaled sharply, mind breeding nightmare scenarios like doxies in the dark. Each wilder than the last.

    "Fine. But don't overstep."

    "Wouldn't dream of it."

    Summary

If you picked this up in search of scandal, heroics, or the sort of high drama that leaves readers breathless, do yourself a favor and put it right back down. You've gravely overestimated both the contents and their author.

Still here? I have to ask: are you missing a chromosome (not that there's anything wrong with that) or simply a glutton for disappointment?

You'll find no insight into the grand mysteries of Hogwarts here, you know. Merely a catalogue of the everyday, recorded by one whose chief contribution to the school is not bumping (too often) into the furniture.

If this somehow still qualifies as a page turner, by all means, proceed. I suppose I can't actually stop you.

But Sebastian, if you're reading this, do have the decency to refrain from scrawling in the margins. I fear the world is not yet ready for the annotated edition.

    Summary

Sebastian locked onto her gaze. Then pivoted to a table piled high with unclaimed parcels.

"You'll have to tell me more about that, by the way." Shoulders rolled with purpose among boxes and bags. Nearly ritualistic, like he'd plundered them before.

A portrait of Paracelsus gave a ghostly side-eye in the greenish gloom. So did MC.

    "What're you getting into?"

Paper tore; a cork popped. That was answer enough, but:

"Booze shouldn't be wasted. Finders, keepers."

The last and only time she drank with Sebastian, it was a laugh.

But funhouse mirror sort of laughter. Sweet and sour, cider, skeletons in closets. A man's face where a boy's should be, fading in and out.

    A reel playing the unreal.

Still, MC couldn't shake the thought: was it forced? Did he still have some twisted compulsion to make up for… something, despite the fragile peace?

Maybe he was just bored. Big parties got old.

She had asked him to team up in Potions, and they were both planless tonight—so why not chat a bit? Kill the awkwardness, and come away all the more ready for their practicum.

And Sebastian truly drunk? Now that was an intriguing thought.

    Summary

It was absurd. Juvenile. A paradox of masculinity and insecurity.

    Ominis loomed behind, exhaling tranquility.

The evening air hit them like a cool, silk sheet. MC turned, mischief sparking. Charm with a terrifying edge. "You'd mentioned an inn?"

Sebastian grinned. Confidence returning, if only for a second. "Take your pick."

Their trio carved a path through Spire Alley, shadows dancing.

Ominis, ever light-hearted except when it counted, jesting that perhaps the alley itself was a more fitting destination. Her laugh echoed, a sassy spit of breath.

The inn's air was thick, drowned in woodsy apple. Sebastian kept back, beside Ominis. Waiting.

His moment came as MC spoke to the witch at the counter.

"I'm not holding back, even if you are," he murmured.

And Ominis returned stiffly, from the corner of his mouth: "Hush, before I lose my nerve. Remember, we're going to have to get along."

    "I know that."

Head spinning as he processed it all, Sebastian's eyes caught on a dimple in Ominis' tie. What madness had led them here?

    Summary

"Tell me you want me to leave," Sebastian whispered. His breath a phantom dance across her lips.

Defiance flashed in her eyes. The spark contending with the current that followed his touch. Battling the moment.

The way Sebastian's voice sunk like hot claws against her core. The way his smelted-copper gaze drilled into her, intensity that scorched.

All of it burgeoning instincts of a nature removed from humanity. Temples throbbing with bloodlust barely contained.

The façade had crumbled, revealing only the raw and primeval. Staring at her in freckled anticipation.

The realization that her knees were shaking came only after she spoke, her mouth dry with what she hoped was fear: "I want you to leave."

"Alright, alright." His tone laced with what might've been authenticity. However, that deceptive curl of lips belied it.

In one gasping second, Sebastian released her face and retreated.

Only to double back, snatch her hand in a crushing grip, and yank her into him.

"Then I suppose we'll have to make this quick and dirty."

    Summary

Sebastian's shock at MC's pajamas in-game fifth year gave me an idea.

    ⠂⠁⠈⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂⠄⠄⠂⠁⠁⠂

"Indeed, we'll see what tomorrow brings," he intoned with a shrug so casual it could've been rehearsed. "For now, let's just enjoy the quiet and the warmth."

The words slipped from her almost without thought: "Speaking of, it's like an oven in here." Her throat felt arid. He'd released her from his scheme, given her an out — so why did she persist in this verbal dance?

Sebastian's eyes narrowed, mirth crinkling corners. "An oven, indeed," he echoed, head canting with consideration as piercing as an owl's gaze. His posture shifted; a leg crossed over the other once more. "You could always move further away from the fire if it's too much for you…"
