Weird-looking fellers, with Mediterranean features and wild, dark curls that made them blend but not quite blend with the octoroons of the Mobile metropolitan area. They came from islands far away was all us Bamas knew, and were suited to a treacherous and luxe life on the water, which is why it was no surprise that they came to be the official custodians of the Oohapka Wetlands in the early 1970s, right when the government started giving two shits about Mother Earth and establishing national parks. They were “eccentric,” my mom used to say in a sour tone with her face twisted up like she’d eaten a lemon, but I remember them as more than South Bama’s resident environmentally-conscious oddballs. I remember them from the New Golden Age of Television, when Swamp Monarchy aired in the August of 2008 on A&E and ushered in a new era of reality TV that would only be just barely surpassed by Jersey Shore in pure trashy subcultural pizazz.
