He couldn’t recall exactly how their lives had collided together; each time they talked about it, one of them would spin a ridiculous tale, grander and grander with each mouthful of sake. Okita, a gangly young boy, had wrenched Nagakura from the mouth of a bear. Nagakura, rapidly growing, had found Okita tied to the supporting post of an ocean pier. Both of them claimed to have rescued the other from a pack of rabid wolves in the wilderness.
It didn’t matter how or why or when, just that they had.

Nishitani’s croaking voice is as high-pitched and giddy as always. It cuts the noiselessness. He strolls into the dim little club, one of these gaudy ones with LED strips on the ceiling painting the whole place cherry-electronic red, the same color as his suit. The stage is lit from the inside, making it glow like a flashlight shining through a cranium. Sagawa looks over his shoulder from where he’s splayed in the booth, a cigarette perched between his smug lips, eyes squinted in contentment.
“When you called me, I didn’t expect the girl you had to be so, uh—muscular.”

He clapped Majima hard on the arm, and if any of this were normal, if Lee was actually telling him something instead of leaving him in the dark, if he wasn’t about to bowl over in shock, and most importantly, if he hadn’t managed to practically twist Majima’s arm out of its socket during that fight, leaving Majima aching all through the night, then maybe he wouldn’t have hissed and jerked away with the sharp flare of pain.

“Let me help ya,” a gloved hand left his suit jacket and stroked him through his slacks, surprisingly gentle, but practiced.

Kiryu looks at him in the eye for the first time. Kiryu has deep under-eye bags, his skin is waxy, and the dullness of his coloring indicates his sleeplessness. He’s aged significantly from stress. He seems older, paler, but somehow stronger. The softness of his cheeks and his frame has dissipated entirely, replaced with a more rigid, more muscular outline. Whatever remaining baby fat clinging to him from his twenties and thirties is gone. His cheekbones jut out of his stoic face. His body seems as impenetrable as the steel of his glare.
“I don’t know who you are,” Kiryu says. The words themselves wound Kiryu to say as much as it evidently does Majima to hear, “Leave me alone.”

Kiryu lets out an amused huff, “Yeah,” he says, “that’s what I did. If that’s a problem, Majima-san, we can forget I ever said anything.” He sounds a little defeated simply letting the words escape him, though Majima’s eye widens a little, and he grips the others' shirt just that bit tighter, pressing his face into his shoulder. Kiryu takes this as his cue to rest a large hand against the back of Majima’s head, running his fingers through the choppy, black haircut.
