Summary
Philip reaches for the bottle of chamomile and breweswort and lathers a few drops on his hand before massaging it into the boy’s hair in gentle motions. He combs the boy’s hair with his fingers, trying to shape it into something familiar that tugs at his heartstrings. His brother has always styled it in a few ways, but often defaults to just tying his hair back as it is the most convenient. Philip twirls a lock of hair on his finger, and he distantly misses braiding this hair of wheatgold. Maybe he should tell this Grimwalker to grow his hair out.

He was well-known as the prodigy wherever one might look. Children strived to be like the Golden guard, and their parents admired him too - he was a perfect role model, an ideal that was easy to believe in, a hero for those who sought hope and a slither of protection against the wild witches. On Belos’ opinion, he was a predictable boy and the worst liar of all his grimwalkers.

Summary
More names got called. The sound of the sigil carving itself into scales, flesh, fur, and slime made shivers prickle down the back of Hunter’s neck. He wondered what it felt like; quick and painless, most likely. Though their faces were hidden by masks, no one conveyed otherwise that it was especially painful.
“We already know the emperor’s little protégé got in.” A demon beside him in line whispered. “I wonder which one he is? Probably that first pipsqueak who went up.”
Voices shushed them.
Deep under his generic Coven Scout uniform, Hunter shrunk in on himself. His eyes unwillingly trailed up to Belos reclining on the throne. Was he bored to tears, or was he waiting with equally bated breath for Hunter’s name to be called? Did he care at all, really? Hunter couldn’t tell from his body language alone.
What would Hunter do if he didn’t get into the Emperor’s Coven? What would be the point of anything? What use could he be to Belos at all?

Summary
Hunter and Luz are stuck in the emperor's mind but get separated from the small Belos building a trap. They see things both of them wish they could forget and Hunter has to deal with the revelations bought on by it.
As it turned out, his beloved uncle was a hopeless monster that had been in love with his own brother and chased that love with every Golden guard. Many of them were killed while in the throws of pleasure with him and Hunter would be next.

Summary
The first time the palisman souls speak to him, he genuinely thinks they’re God Himself, gifting Philip, his most devoted follower, a chance to convene with the Lord Almighty and rewarding his utmost belief. God, of course, cannot see him right now, not in Hell, but Philip doesn’t like to remember that, doesn’t like to think about how alone he is here.
It starts quiet (doesn’t everything?), just a whisper in the back of his head, going, "Phi—lip, Ph—ilip, Phil—ip. Philip, who are you?"
They claw their way into his memories and rip out his darkest moments, attacking him with them over and over again. They whisper blasphemies of the mother he doesn’t remember, tell him she didn’t deserve the end she got and that perhaps he’s the evil one. They tell him his old friends in the Human Realm will have forgotten him by now. They taunt him with images of his brother, of the red cardinal, and they promise to haunt him forever.
Then they dig into his memories of the Word of God, and a particular story he’d been fascinated with as a child, and—
"CAIN," they begin to call him.

“Very well,” he replies with impish glee. “How about… a kiss?”
He sounds almost bashful saying it, and Finney finds it impossible to comprehend. How dare the Grabber play coy after everything that happened last night in this basement, after everything he did to him? How can it be possible that a man so vile can be so prudish?
Where was that shyness when he was groping Finney’s chest, his legs immobilized under the man’s weight and his hands pinned above his head?
Do or don’t, your loss, he imagines his captor thinking. He closes his wet eyes, resigned. “Okay, just be quick and—”
“Aww,” the man coos, “you must’ve misunderstood.” Finney can see the way his eyes crinkle through the shallow eyeholes. He wants to wipe that predatory grin off the man’s face forever. “I want you to kiss me.”
Following the night of his assault, Finney asks the Grabber for emergency contraception. The man's decision can be swayed, however, nothing in this world is free. Finney should've known that by now.

Summary
Even though Hunter was disfigured and broken beyond all reasonable repair, he still looked breathtaking; after all, there was a certain beauty within death.
Beauty in the way the light reflected off his glassy wine-red eye. Beauty in the clammy greyness of his skin, untouched by the flames. Beauty in the bruises and angry rashes smudged across his body over top of broken bones. Beauty in how completely and utterly still he laid sprawled out over the cold stainless steel examiner’s table. Beauty in how the only sound to be heard was the gentle hum of the light above them, and Belos’ own deep, steady heartbeat.
Carefully, Belos removed his own mask. Still cupping Hunter’s chin, he pressed a kiss to his cool cheek. His fingers twitched, his heart quivered.
There will be time to grieve Hunter later. For now, Belos needed to take advantage of this final moment with his nephew. After all, he’s been waiting on this exact moment for a very, very long time.

Summary
Hunter has been thinking about his scars a lot since everything calmed down. Probably too much. Most of all, he's concerned with ownership— almost all his scars are from Belos, and he's tired of being a walking sample of the Emperor's mark. But what if he had a scar he could call completely his own, one that had come from himself? Then at least he'd own some part of his body. The only issue is, that's not how his friends see it.
