Cloud sits on the bench, spine stiff. For all that he and Barret have gotten used to each other, gotten comfortable with each other, this situation is… definitely uncomfortable. When Aerith had suggested they turn the Gold Saucer trip into a date night, he’d kind of assumed she’d meant… with him. After all, she had promised one date as payment for his bodyguard services when they first met.
Instead, she’d flounced off with Tifa.
Which left him and Barret alone.
On a gondola with very tight quarters and fireworks going off around them.

It wasn't official; there was no signage. But SOLDIERs who stumbled up to the fences at the Chocobo Farm found a warm, safe welcome away from the bustle of the world, and could stay as long as they needed, so long as they agreed to help out with chores and odd jobs. Choco Bill allowed as how that was a kindness maybe the world owed the haunted, troubled, wounded young men who darkened his doorstep.
The last two to arrive weren't quite the same as the others, though.

If this were a different story, Zack thinks, he would be using his last moments to remember kind, green eyes and a sweet smile. He would be staring out into the raining sky, life running out of him, while making peace with the fact that he would never see his first love again. If this were a different story, Zack would not be left empty-handed, crying out as his friend stumbles away into the remnants of a battlefield. He would not be praying for that blond head to turn, aching to capture the final sight of a cherished face before locking it behind two lids.
No, this does not feel like a fitting end to this story at all―and Zack overflows with the one childish thought that this is unbearably unfair. In the rare moments that he, as any soldier must, contemplated his death, he never imagined that he would die alone.

Memories were kinda hazy in the back of his mind, but he got bits and pieces - outskirts of Midgar, talking with Zack (and talking and talking and Zack had that kind of childlike smile, all white teeth and gums, that Cloud remembers well), chit-chat again once outside of the city, a mouth that is way bigger than the whole thing, void. It’s a series of events which Cloud could easily put together, but maybe not now with a splitting headache and a dizziness to match.Series

Zack Fair and Cloud Strife meet each other over hundreds of different timelines. They all end with them in love. They all end with at least one of them dead.
