The apartment they share together is extremely small, the rent exorbitantly high, and the walls paper thin. Nancy listens half-heartedly as Jonathan answers the phone. “Hello? Oh, hey bud. Look, I’m a little busy right now—” Will. Nancy applauds Jonathan’s effort, but she also recognizes a lost cause when she hears one. Her five-minute warning is all but meaningless; Jonathan will talk to his brother all night if Will needs him to. She half considers picking up the remote and fighting with their horrible, secondhand television to try and flip to a decent channel, but then Jonathan’s voice grows suddenly sharper. “Whoa—what?! Slow down."

“How did you step on my left foot with both feet?” Jonathan asked in bewilderment, shaking his leg out. “Do you know how to dance at all?”
Frozen, only Nancy’s head moved as she shook it. Jonathan’s eyes widened.
“Really? You don’t know how to dance? Have you ever before?”
“In school plays,” Nancy defended herself, and her face felt warm as Jonathan laughed. It was a real laugh, not the sarcastic chuckle he usually let out. “…They don’t count, do they?”
“Nope,” Jonathan agreed, reaching out to take her hand again. “Do you want me to show you how to actually do this?”
Nancy raised an eyebrow at him as a smile crept on her face. “You know how to dance?”
“Better than you,” Jonathan said without missing a beat, and Nancy laughed. Really laughed. This night was turning out completely different to how she imagined originally. “Alright, just follow my lead.”-
On an impulse, Nancy asks Jonathan to the Snow Ball.

Nancy's wearing a dress today. It's pale blue and the material looks soft. It compliments her eyes. She looks pretty, but he doesn't say that because friends don't say that. He wonders if she's cold. If he should offer her his jacket. Then he rationalizes that friends don't do that either.
It's complicated, being her friend. A part of him thinks it beats the alternative, that he should be grateful for these small moments but then she'll do something too intimate and he'll retreat until he remembers how much he hates being away from her. It's like a sick and twisted version of hide and seek.

Instantly, that familiar pain reappears, shooting right to Will’s sternum as he’s pinned under Mike’s piercing stare. Half-hearted concern, and confusion, and care, all shining from those dark, soulful eyes. “Hey,” Mike says, tentatively.
Will thinks about walking away. Strongly considers it, in fact. But his momentary indecision has frozen him in place, and. Well. He’s never been especially good at ignoring Mike. And after the day they’ve had…
Will bites back as much bitterness as he can. (Which, it turns out, is not very much at all.) “Hey.”

In the end, it doesn’t matter. None of it fucking matters. Because what’s really in control is the tension. This elusive string tied between their chests that’s always changing length. Right now it’s so short and taught and strong that Will can’t imagine resisting it. So really, it was never a matter of if he would. Just when. When will he fold? When will he let go and let himself follow Mike into the water?
He dares to glance down at his knees, where he can see Mike’s fingers peeking out from behind his calves (as if he needed that visual reminder that they’re touching), and then back up to meet Mike’s expectant gaze.
He’s going to do it. He’s such a fucking idiot.

Mike & Will have a long overdue conversation on the way back to Hawkins— by, in, and around a random motel pool.

She holds her breath, counts to ten three times over, and then, when nothing jumps out of the (albeit limited) darkness to attack her, she relaxes, taking another steadying sip of water and shaking her head, annoyed with herself.
“Nancy?” a voice asks from the doorway, and she drops the glass.
Nancy is a little intimidated by Will, even though she has approximately zero reasons to be.
