Buck found Tommy in the bathroom, a dark shade crouching next to the shower, clasping his knees. He dropped down, put the phone aside and let its light illuminate parts of the ceiling. It was enough to see Tommy’s face, absolutely frightened, eyes wide open, staring into the void. He was panting way too fast, close to hyperventilating. Buck knew these signs.
“Tommy. Hey. Look at me, okay? I’m here,” he whispered, his voice hoarse for some reason. “What... what's going on?”
“I don't know,” Tommy said, almost sobbing, “I don't know, I just don't know.”

The doctor said this might be temporary. Might be. That’s not a thing you want to hear from a medical professional. Buck had to google anosmia after the appointment, he’d never even heard about that condition. His doctor had some theories, saying the most possible cause was the medication he had received quite a few times, standard procedure if one inhaled too much smoke. Well, that was kind of an occupational hazard. And he’d not even noticed it, probably, if it hadn’t been for Tommy’s furrowed brow when he took the pan from his hand, the steak almost smoking in it. Suddenly, all of the little incidents made sense, all of these times he blamed a lack of sleep for not getting the joke about him being woken from the smell of coffee. There are still things he can smell, albeit somewhat muffled. His sense of smell, though, is buried under a thick veil, and it no longer lets in the smell of burning.

Buck is quite distracting. Since he has this medal around his neck, he looks like a Labrador puppy who has been given his first treat. That's a praise kink, for sure, and Tommy just knows he's gotta store this information deep in his mind. Most of all, the man just looks so happy. So content. Tommy never knew that seeing someone else so happy could be so important to him. He looks at Buck – his boyfriend, for goodness sake, how did that actually happen? – and his throat constricts, and it has nothing to do with the fact that he has stuffed far too big a piece of cake into his mouth.
