“Your sorcery won’t help you now, witch,” someone told him. “Can you not feel the brand?”
With a sinking feeling, Tecwyn realized what the pain at the back of his neck must be. Caeth, the rune of restraint. Carve it on a barrel of lamp-oil and it would never fall foul of a stray spark. Burn it onto the skin of a mage, and it would take two more of equal power to draw their magic back out into the open.
“They give it to all of us. Just in case,” the same voice carried on. “No doubt it’s your kind who caused all this trouble in the first place.”
“Peace, Ifan,” soothed a different voice, lower and more calm. “We’re all the same now.”
