Bucky’s crying before he’s off the boat and he’s the least surprised out of anyone to realize it.
He’s always been a softie, a leaky faucet, and the war hasn’t changed that, so he doesn’t know why the sob that smacks him startles him bad enough that he grips the strap of his bag doubly hard, ready to swing it around like a battering ram, ready to find that cloying, invisible enemy. He’s not being ambushed, on his belly in the muck and camellias, cypress hanging low, moonlight casting an eerie smile upon Lake Como like it’s enjoying the hell out of muffled gunshots and the wet grunt of lifeblood spattering onto the undergrowth. He’s not trucking through a river that sucks at his boots like quicksand kisses, gun raised and one eye squinted shut to peek through the scope. He’s not under the street in Liverpool clutching his own hand to hide the shake, catching Peggy’s eye across the deep dank dark like she’d have anything solid to give him besides that wan shrug.
That’s done. He’s safe.
He’s just a weenie.

Summary
Lucia di Genova and Mariam Al-Kaysani are very good friends. They meet up every Wednesday morning to not-gossip over tea and excellent pastries, and their favourite subject is, of course, their sons.
As time passes and it becomes painfully clear that Yusuf and Nicolò are in love with one another, and then dating one another, Lucia and Mariam wait patiently for their boys to come to them and announce their relationship. Except, Yusuf and Nicolò never do. Instead, Lucia and Mariam are forced to watch from the sidelines as Yusuf and Nicolò continue to pretend to be 'just friends', even though they have been together for over ten years and have been living together for just as long.
Basically, just a lot of wholesomeness and families (but mothers especially) being very supportive.

Sarwa is ladling stew into bowls and she hands the first one to Yusuf, who passes it to Nicolo and takes a drink from the now filled flask. “Is he your lover?” she asks.
Yusuf chokes on water and Nicolo pounds his back, eyebrows peaked with concern.
“I—” Yusuf pauses, wiping his streaming eyes.
Sarwa looks at him, nothing but mild curiosity on her face.
Yusuf glances at Nicolo. The firelight paints his cheekbones flickering gold, his eyes hooded and sleepy in the dim light.
“I don’t know what he is,” Yusuf finally admits, still looking at Nicolo.
Nicolo’s mouth quirks and he takes another bite of soup.
“He looks at you like you belong to him,” Sarwa says.
Nicolo keeps eating, oblivious to what they’re saying.
“I think he belongs to me too,” Yusuf whispers.

A dam bursts inside Nicky, and he is so swept away in the tide of his relief he admits everything. “I meant it,” he says. “Of course I meant it, I’ve fallen in love with you. Let me keep you. Let me stay with you. Marry me, Joe.”
“I thought I would spend my nights in darkness,” Joe tells him, and Nicky knows this about him, too, that he will not give a straight answer when a poem would do. “I thought I’d live on a pale shadow of what you’ve made me feel. But you – your smile could light up the darkest night, Nicolò. Your heart is so sweet, my love, you’ve captured mine so easily. I’ll stay with you for as long as you’ll have me.”
Nicky would blame the wine, he would blame the summer breeze, the beautiful view, temporary insanity, anything, but it would be a lie and he’s an honest man. If he’s drunk on anything, it’s Joe. If anything makes him shiver, it’s Joe. If there is any beautiful view, it’s Joe’s eyes, bright with tears and smiling at him. If he’s insane, it’s only love.

If someone else were to enter their room and switch on the lamp they would be able to gather clues as to how he and Joe spend their nights. The hand-knotted afghan rug by the balcony door is askew, and a pair of empty whiskey tumblers sit on the coffee table glittering in the light. The bed is unmade, a discarded tie looped lazily around one of the slats in the headboard, and a chair is pulled out haphazardly from the heavy wooden desk in the corner. The desk itself is littered with drawing paper and charcoal pencils and crescent moon shapes scratches into its surface. The space smells like them, like Joe, like men and sex and sleepless nights. Nicky can almost feel the phantom sting of carpet burn on his knees.
