“Maybe you should just retire—“—one of his eyes has drawn open, a predacious glint as he watches you naked, bent over him—“—Be a masseuse instead’a doin’ hero work.”

You make a final push before you make your way over to the other calf, which he turns to allow you better access.

“Yeah? How am I gonna help pay bills for us, then?” You joke, letting your hands skate down the firm muscle, careful to maintain even pressure. “Start working in a spa?”

“Fuck no—“—his reply is instantaneous, righteously insulted—“—I’m your only client.”

    Summary

“That’s why you keep asking to go on patrol with me, right? My cutting intellect?” He asks, dipping a fry from his takeout box in a pool of ketchup. You wonder if the splotch on his sleeve is from a rather exuberant dip, or if it’s blood from earlier.

“Among other things.” You say, feeling like it’s finally your turn to offer someone an ambiguous response. Especially as he returns to this topic of conversation he is so insistent on having out with you. For emphasis, you take a great bite of your food to allot you more time to muster defenses.

“What other things?” Jason presses, because it might work with someone else—but not him, who, with no protection of the mask to guide his face, bores his eyes into you.

“Like the fact that you paid for the food.” You offer gleefully, both of you knowing this is unsatisfactory.

“Can’t be the only thing.” He says, his tone surprisingly level. Why on earth is your heart beating so fast?

    Summary

“Have you noticed that Wally is acting—kind of weird?” You ask Dick as the two of you sort through files in need of being digitized. His fingers hover over Dr. Light’s file, nose wrinkling at the smell that emanates from the papers he exposes to natural air for the first time in decades.

“Weird how?” He cocks a brow at you from across the room.

“Like…” You pause, for even in a world of metahuman, supernatural, unbelievable delights and sights—it does sound stupid when you say it out loud. “…He can see the future—or something.”

“Maybe you’re just so slow to him that what he’s seeing is just his present.” Dick presents as counter-hypothesis to your proposal, but you’ve heard that before. That’s Wally’s every waking day, operating at full functionality while everyone else is the fly trapped in slow-plodding amber. What’s going on now doesn’t seem quite right.

    Summary

“Tongue tied in front of the main man, huh?” He’s pleased at your inarticulacy, closing back the distance that you had put between the two of you—he looms, blocking out your view of the stars that surround you both. “I get that I have that effect, baby.”

“I was trying to help—”—is all that you can come up with. “They were going to shoot you.”

“Yeah, saw that nice move with the diffuser.” Lobo doesn’t sound appreciative—he sounds smug, a wolfish grin on his face. “Didn’t know you had a soft spot for me like that.”

“I don’t—”—you begin, frowning as you try to hear yourself over the rush of the pulse in your heart—it’s never been quite so loud before, so concentrated in the base of your throat.

    Summary

You can’t help but laugh. To be fair, the letter does look like it was written over the curve of someone’s thigh as they tried to furiously scribble out every last thought they could document on the limited real estate.

Every single square inch of the paper is cramped with words so tightly smushed together that you can tell that the message is heartfelt. Or, based off of the fact that you can only read three words—‘fuck,’ ‘slow,’ and ‘Guy,’ it seems to ring…sincere.

You look up only with your eyes from the paper. “And he asked you to read this out loud?”

Simon chuffs a laugh. “Does it really surprise you?”

    Summary

“Tim?” you ask, feeling the fear leach out of you like a sieve, the bat lowering to a downward angle. “What are you doing here?”

“I can’t pay my partner a visit?” He asks defensively, holding up his hands as though he’s not supremely capable of dispatching you. The gesture, that he’s reassuring you of his lack of ill intent towards you, is endearing and reassuring at once.

“That apparently,” He tacks on, “They didn’t feel the need to get dressed up for?”

“What?” you scowl in confusion, focusing your gaze upon yourself. You feel another follow-up of adrenaline from the reserves, coupled with the heat of mortification as you remember your fond habit of sleeping in the buff.

    Summary

“Oh, yeah—”—Wally joins the offense around a mouthful of food that seems to be evaporating into thin air—“—Because you liked him, right?”

You sit perfectly still, hoping that if you refrain from motion, it means that these predators will not be able to see you pointedly avoiding them. On the distant side of the hall, you notice as Superman carefully, slowly looks up from his tray of food.

Kyle, it seems, is impervious to your strategy, and goes for the jugular. “Well, liked means that it’s in the past tense. And you still like him, right?”

“Is that such a bad thing?” You ask, admiring the coastal plain of the Asiatic continent from where you look out the window. It seems futile to wish you could be transported there in the blink of an eye.

“Clark’s a great reporter—a smart guy with a fantastic writing style.”

Wally’s voice is slick with malignant intent as he says, “It didn’t sound like you were into his excellent journalistic integrity the last time you mentioned him.”

    Summary

Only now do you wonder what you have cycled frantic breath through, into your body. What has happened to you since you joined her in these cursed Hesperides?

She does not allow you presence of mind to dwell long upon this.

“What do you think, dearest? Frightening to you?” Her fingers find gentle, possessive clutch around you, much like the flora that chains you down. Your only fleeting wish is that you wish those fingers would take such careful exploration of you much like the vines that seem to strangle the words from you.

“I—ah—think so—”—You find it difficult to speak, choked by a slow, simmering desire and the twisting grasp around you.

“Yes, you certainly will, won’t you?” She asks ambiguously.

You only have a flash of an instant, in the dark, to see the indiscernible look pass across his face. And then it’s gone, that implacable confidence easily returning as he surprises you with what he says next.

“You wanna dance?” He asks, and you actually have to put down your drink on the table in surprise.

“You know how to dance?” You ask, feeling your eyebrows involuntarily jump up your forehead. He’s undeterred by this question, that smile only growing more smug.

“You don’t?” Guy asks, ever the contrarian to turn the tables on you. You won’t take this lying down.

“You know,” you begin as you cross over to the trash can to bin your gloves, “It’s very interesting that Guy’s busted up and you aren’t.”

He makes a sleazy chuckle that says more than any confession ever will. “That’s ‘cause I’m a pro, sweetheart. Guy’s still a little…inexperienced compared to a vet like me.”

You give him a dubious look from the trash. “So you’re totally uninjured, then?”

“Yeah,” he cracks a grin, “But I wouldn’t say no to some tender, loving care, baby.”

    Summary

“Are we going to be suspicious if we show up in uniform?” You ask, looking down to your blues and casting a quick glance over to his greens.

He offers nothing more than a noncommittal shrug, and then to your surprise, a rather unprincipled smirk crosses over his face.

“Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been here off the clock.” He admits, and you can’t help but let out a disbelieving scoff. “Think they know me by name now.”

“Well, at least you’ll be a nice distraction when we go in.” You joke as the two of you begin to walk.

“I’ll be the life of the fuckin’ party,” He reassures you breezily. “We’ll be able to squeeze any of these suckers for information by the time I’m through with ‘em.”

    Summary

“Tim said he would keep me company until you got here,” you explain in that hushed, practiced tone you’ve perfected to a tee. “I’ve been keeping everything running as normal.”

It’s not you he calls into question, but Bruce isn’t going to verbalize this as he takes a sip and locks eyes upon Tim, who is still locking eyes upon you. Subtle.

“You’re always welcome,” Bruce says, keeping his tone pleasant as Tim finally deigns him with a smile, “But it is a welcome surprise.”

“Well, wouldn’t want your assistant to get lonely while they wait for you to turn up.” Tim says, and it’s delivered lightly enough that a passerby would think it a wholesome joke. You even offer a genial, polite laugh as you return back to your desk to swipe something for Bruce.

The look in Tim’s eye as he turns to watch you informs Bruce of all he needs to know.

    Summary

“Need some help down there?” Guy asks as you check the other boot laces just to be safe. He’s pretty considerate—not at all like how Bea and Tora said. His voice sounds odd, though, almost as if he’s tilting his head to look at something—maybe he can see the asteroid approaching.

“I’m fine,” you chirp as you resurface, smoothing out the bunched fabric from your adjusted posture, “Everything look good from the back?”

You look over at him to see that he’s already gone to the trouble of making that check for you, eyes slowly meeting yours.

“Just about as good as the front does.” He replies honestly.

    Summary

“You want somethin’ fucked up? Broken? Handled?” There’s something implicative in the way that he delivers the word, ‘handled,’ but you don’t dwell on this as you turn to Lobo to dedicate some medicinal care.

He seems to grow a degree more predacious as you cross from the known territory of Guy into deeper waters, towards him.

“You just let the main man know,” Lobo says as you settle the wrappings on the nightstand beside him, stepping into the open space between his legs, “And he’ll take care of it.”

At this, he tilts his head back to show off the wicked scrape from jawline to collarbone that he sports. “Think I need some help down here, sweetheart.”

As if you missed it, he points a thick finger to the scene of the crime, angling a leer down at you—even sitting, he still towers over you.

“I mean, I know that Booster’s got this guy he’s been seeing.”

“And I bet Bea and Tora are going to be each other’s, so that kind of cancels it out.” You say, looking away from the conversation that you find yourself more and more invested in. “You think Guy’s going to bring that person—”

“That he was making out with in the backyard?” Ted lets out a dry, breathy laugh. “Wouldn’t surprise me.” You don’t offer anything else, worried that this plan that is already half-baked in your brain is going to fail to launch, when he sighs gustily and slumps his shoulders.

“I mean, it’s nice that Max set us up and everything, but I just don’t want to roll up to this thing alone, you know?”

You go out on a limb and a prayer as you lean upon the humming modem. “Well, why don’t you put my name down?”

“Please don’t make me think about J’onn having sex any more than I have to. Oh god—what if he can hear our thoughts from out here?”

You cast a nervous look up to the second floor where his closed window shows a lights-out room, but Guy is cavalier.

“He oughta be touched we’re so concerned for his well-bein’.” He cracks a grin sidelong at you. “Besides, don’t matter anyways.”

“Why’s that?” You ask curiously, turning over onto your stomach, the blades of grass tickling the exposed skin. He cracks an eager smile, happy to provide you with an answer.

He leans in, encroaching your space so that nothing is visible but him and that jeering smile and the span of his broad frame—but you refuse to retreat an inch, a wicked smile turning up the corner of your mouth.

“Bet I could take anything in this fight you could with one hand tied behind my back—”—you lick your lips for emphasis, never moving your eyes from his—“—And leave you chokin’ on my dust.”

“Yeah?” Guy asks, his voice dropping to a low, challenging register. “Big talk, but I don’t see anythin’ to back it up.”

He gives an almighty shrug, turning back to the work at hand, making a disdainful tsk through his teeth. “That’s cause you ain’t a people person like me—”—at this, he bears a reproachful glint for your apparent lack of ability—“—I got a knack for reading people.”

“Just like you do with heavy machinery?” You deadpan, raising the mouth of the bottle to your lips again, a streak of condensation trailing down the arc of your wrist.

“Yeah, honey—”—he’s overt now in his conviction, a jaunty look on his face—“—I’m a jack of all trades.”

“Sure, sure—just remind me to be somewhere else when you fire the engine up.” You giggle, tugging down the hem of your tank top to avoid the splash of beer trailing down your collarbone. He watches carefully as you swipe your fingers over the slope of your chest, careful to keep it from seeping into the fabric—but you’re so distracted in your agenda you don’t see.

And you, of course, don’t want to admit that you’ve enjoyed his touch all these times. That when he palms the top of your head in a comforting pat as he strides past you (“Ah, there’s the pint-size again”) it makes your heart race.

Or when he rests an elbow on your shoulder when the two of you occupy similar spaces (“Hold this for me, will you, tiny?”) expecting you to bear the brunt of his weight, you have to swallow to avoid making a noise that you know you’ll deeply regret.

Or when he hucks a leg over your own when you are seated side-by-side, shooting you a cheeky “Watch the checked luggage for me, will you, honey?” you’d gladly do it. Because it means he gets to use you. And you’ve realized, embarrassingly enough, that you like getting used in this manner.

    Summary

    “Uh, what’s the occasion, Guy?”

“I got a date.” Guy replies simply, adjusting the collar to his shirt with a smart tug of his fingers. Upon closer inspection, Ted realizes that the pattern is tiny green lantern rings floating in a sea of chartreuse.

“With who?” Ted asks curiously, albeit extremely dubiously. Guy deigns to unbutton the top button of his shirt for a rather rakish look.

“My date, that’s who.” Guy returns, unhelpful as ever.

“Sure, Guy.” Ted replies, nodding along obsequiously. He pushes a hand to cover his mouth, as though it will make him seem contemplative, instead of as if he is trying to suffocate a laugh.
