He was relieved, to be honest. He'd grown up seeing how his parents had treated each other and he knew that royal marriages were lucky if they had some semblance of cordiality. Nikolai had long since given up hopes of romance in his life, so it was a pleasant surprise that he could be friendly with Alina again. It was enough.
.....or was it? AKA Alina accepts Nikolai's proposal after Mal dies (for good) in the Shadow Fold. He says they'll probably only be friends, but this is a fanfic so y'all know how it'll go lol.

Connor said nothing. He took another drag on his cigarette. Blew the smoke out slowly. “I’m not going to college, dad.”
Dad.
When was the last time he heard that?
For months now, maybe years, it had been nothing and if it was ever something it was “Larry” or “Fucking Larry.” Never dad.
It wasn’t right hearing that.
“You have to go.” That was all he could say back. His throat was choked up.
“I’m not going to college, dad,” Connor tried again. In the dark, in the moonlight, the bags under his eyes were more pronounced. He looked like he was sagging under the weight of holding himself up. “I’m dead.”

Terrifying is a bad word, of course, and Evan would rather cut his tongue with— with something dull, like an unsharpened pencil, or a very not-sharp knife, just to let the torture linger or something— because he would. No. He would not say that, ever, alive, and aloud, if he must, because it’s a bad word to be telling somebody but honestly he hadn’t known how else to explain how Connor looks like, all pale and sickly, like a marble statue almost (and dolls and mannequins and everything resembling a human form freaks Evan out, like literally, and maybe that’s why Evan is insisting on the word “terrifying”) on the floor of his bathroom.
But beautiful.
