Summary
His grandma and abuelo went to bed about an hour ago. Chris should be sleeping too, he’s got school in the morning. Instead he sits under the covers with his phone flashlight casting harsh shadows across his makeshift cave. The air is stuffy, it makes him sweat a bit. There’s a bag of letters open in front of him.
Chris frowns before pulling one out at random. He runs his fingers across the manila of the envelope, it smells old. The top is already ripped open and when he thumbs at it he finds a folded piece of paper tucked neatly inside.
He takes a sharp breath in, his heart is pounding now. He takes a peek out from the covers like he’s worried someone is watching him. Of course, nobody is there.
He pulls out the paper, unfolds it in his hands. Takes another deep breath before he reads:

Buck smiles at him, fond, and Eddie aches, he aches so much to tell Buck all the things about his big stupid gay awakening that he couldn’t tell his best friend when he came out to him during a quiet night sometime after Chris first texted him back in the summer. All the things that are so intimately tied to Buck.
‘You are,’ Buck says, quiet, eyes sparkling and Eddie’s a stronger man than he thought because he doesn't get on one knee in the middle of the kitchen and propose to another man's boyfriend. ‘Really good. At that.’-----
It's Halloween, Chris is heading back to Texas for a few days and Frank gives Eddie therapy homework to do something for himself, to let himself want things. Eddie enlists Buck's help and something shifts between them in the following week.

“Right.” Blue eyes, staring into his soul. Seeing all of him.
“I’m glad you’re still here.”
“Wouldn’t be anywhere else.” Buck smiled that million-dollar Buckley grin with a duck of his head. He really did look perfect with his face flushed, neck sweaty, and hair mussed. Eddie found himself being unable to resist smiling back.

In which Christopher is graduating high school and the yard work involved in preparing the Diaz house leads one of his friends to assume Buck is Eddie’s boyfriend, giving the Diaz and the 118 families the perfect opportunity to treat the Buckley-Diaz pair as the married couple they deny being…for a whole weekend. Maybe it’s the ordinary milestone of their child graduating and not near-death experiences that will finally push Buck and Eddie to confess their love to each other.

Buck’s head snaps up. “What? No! I was- That’s not even what I was thinking at all!” He says. “I was mad that you’ve done seventy fucking jumping jacks and you’re not even red! You’re barely sweating, I- You think I don’t have abs?”
Eddie winces. “Uh-”
“I do,” Buck sets the barbell on the ground and stands up from the bench. He cuts an impressive figure, built like a brick house and so big that he makes Eddie feel like a damsel in distress grabbing Prince Charming’s huge biceps after he slays the mean, oppressive dragon. He almost forgets why Buck is stalking up to him until he speaks again “I do have abs.”
Eddie has two options.
One: he could agree with Buck and they can move on. They don’t have to make this A Thing.
Two: he could bicker with his boyfriend and possibly create some super hot sexual tension where Buck gets bossy until he thinks he’s proven Eddie right. This one ends in Eddie getting fucked against the wall, or their kitchen table, or the couch, or-
