Captain Rietveld looked coolly at him. Inej bent her head over her sewing to hide her smiling, since she was not sure she would not laugh outright. She had not thought that Wylan would deliberately provoke the Captain, but perhaps his deference to his father did not reach anyone else.
“I am sure that is not for me to decide,” said the Captain, “But I own I have been perfectly well behaved.”
“Does he lie, Miss Ghafa?”
“No— he has been quite tolerable company,” said Inej. “If not quite a perfect gentleman.”
“You wound me, Miss Ghafa.”
“I suspect I do not, Captain.”

“Are you nervous?” she whispers, looking at him out of the corner of her eye as he scans the crowd for her parents. The number of Suli people here is larger than the number at Fifth Harbour, and it has been almost a year since he last saw them; she does not blame him for having to look.
And, maybe, her gaze being magnified to them every time she spots them in a crowd is something reserved for her, anyway.
“Is my tie straight?” he asks, which means yes. It was the same thing he said in Ketterdam, and he had confessed later, a little breathlessly as they laid together in his bed, that he had been nervous enough to shake.
She turns, and straightens it for him, taking it in hand herself. Then, she taps his cheek once, quickly, and turns back towards the harbour. “It’s perfect.”

"Who's is she, Rollins?" Brekker said. "How will you force her back."
"She belongs in my domain. Underneath the sky," Rollins spat angrily. "All the Sankts answer to me!"
"Do they?" Brekker asked.
"I am KING!" Rollins roared. "When I am free I will make you pay dearly."
The vines tightened their hold and Pekka found it harder to breathe.
"You are no King in my domain," Kaz repeated. "And no King in hers."
Rollins laughed then, delirious. "She may refuse to come up now, boy. But eventually she will fade. This isn't her world. Her existence is rooted to the air. And when that happens, when she fades to nothing, you will remember what I have warned you."
Rollins noted the flicker of doubt in Kaz's expression with satisfaction for a moment before another knife was embedded in his chest. The ichor leaked, adding a drip drip grip sound to the echo of his scream.
"Then tell me why I'm so strong here," the Wraith Queen hissed.
Pekka watched in horror as Brekker handed her something. It was only when she ripped into it with her teeth that Pekka realized what it was.

Inej’s mother is as short and lean as her daughter, her thick black hair streaked with chunks of silver and white, caught in a long braid down her back. Her eyes are dark and wide, and her mouth is steady. When Kaz doesn't immediately join them at the table, she crosses her arms and raises an expectant eyebrow.
To his right, he hears Inej stifle a snicker into her hand as her eyes flicker between her mother and Kaz.
Amara Ghafa is not in the least bit intimidated by Kaz Brekker, or his reputation, or his fine dark suits.
She looks pointedly at the seat next to Inej. “Join us for dinner, Mr. Brekker.”---
