Teablins have lived for millions of years, and you wonder what did it feel like—to find out people hurt, people kill themselves, people torture each other—and still choose to be kind, to be full of child-like wonder and ease, to love whole-heartedly with such firey warmth, instead of giving into the cool violence.

Stephanie had a worried expression on her face for a split second, that darkness in her gaze deepening. She smiled as soon as it was gone. It looked wrong. Damian felt off balance.
“If it feels like it, they probably have. Damian, if–” She paused, feet shifting. “You can always tell me anything, okay?”
The truth felt like a lump in Damian’s throat. He nodded, looking away as she rested a hand on his head. She hesitated for a bit too long and Damian stood taut.
