Summary
Even before his mother left, before his father turned to the bottle, before the slamming doors and yellowing bruises, Jud could tell something was wrong with him. All he remembers of his mother is her wings – a deep turquoise, like the sky on a hot summer’s day. He remembers how they looked at his dark feathers, eyes narrowed in disgust.
or: author has a current hyperfixation with biblical angels and wanted to give everyone in wake up dead man wings

Summary
"i never was a believer, but the reverence in his speech would be enough for me to fall to my knees onto the creaking porch with the party behind me, and take my communion right then and there from his holy hands. but i stand. the smoke lingers and we hold each others gazes for a moment, and then he turns his head away and breaks the contact, stubbing out his cigarette, the ember now gone gray, no longer one of the fireflies that fly through the Louisiana night."

Summary
He hears Blanc’s voice, although now it sounds like it’s underwater, dim and muted. Hopefully Blanc hasn’t noticed. Jud tries to shake himself out of his paralysis and tears his eyes away from the sandwich to look back up to the detective. The detective is looking at him with a crease in his brow. Shit.
“Everythin’ alright, son?”
or: author saw this funny idea on tumblr and took it too seriously.

Summary
The Monsignor doesn’t look very threatening dead compared to when he was alive, but you can tell from the stiff body that this was someone important. Something in their bones or the set of their face is different, like even death knows who they were in life. As Jud looks over the body, his eyes catch something. Was he hallucinating, or did Wicks’ eyes just move?
or: author read the script and saw that jud was supposed to faint after looking at wicks' body and decided to rewrite the scene

Summary
That sharp-edged thing caught ceaselessly under Blanc's tongue is shaped an awful lot like the question Who the hell's looking after you? The more time passes, the harder it is to refrain from asking it.

Summary
The idea of letting Blanc do this somehow felt almost… more and less intimate simultaneously. But the idea of being left alone was even more unbearable than any potential embarrassment it might be at war with, and so he'd finally managed a cracked:
"Okay… yeah…" He dared to meet Blanc's eyes, feeling like he'd already been stripped bare before him for days. What was one more step in the direction of the literal?
After everything is over, Blanc brings Jud back to the rectory.
