Summary
“Shit,” Wolfwood breathes. He slides his hands down Vash’s back to cradle under his arms, hefting him upright. It’s obvious that whatever dart Vash was hit with, it was poisoned—but what kind of poison did they use to knock Vash down so bad after so short a time? Then again, all the movement directly after the hit can’t have helped. Wolfwood clicks his tongue, throwing a short glance back at the town they just left. He can’t chance it; that’s the same place that hit him with the damn thing. But the next town is hours out, maybe longer. Is Vash going to make it without a doctor?
“‘S not…” Vash’s head lolls in the other direction, his eyelashes fluttering until his lids fall open completely. “I don’t think it’s… poison.”
Wolfwood snaps back to reality. “What else would you call it?”
“Probably just…” Vash’s brow creases. “If they wanted me for the bounty, they wouldn’t have shot me with a…” His lips move soundlessly for a moment before he finds his voice again. “I can’t move.”

A poisoned dart renders Vash immobile in the aftermath of a shoot-out with some bounty hunters. He and Wolfwood muscle through as always, but Vash is reminded of the last time he couldn't move...

Wolfwood says, “Yeah,” and it takes Vash a second to remember what they were talking about.
“I thought so,” Vash admits. “It’d take a stronger rope than that to keep you… The straps on the Punisher, maybe?”
“We’re not using those,” Wolfwood retorts, and furrows his brow. “This’s fine. I can control myself.”
“Mm, you can, can you?” Vash reaches out with his prosthetic hand, running it along the inside of Wolfwood’s clothed thigh. Wolfwood shivers, but doesn’t react beyond that. Vash smiles, and lets it be a little teasing, even though he knows Wolfwood is as good as his word. He has remarkable restraint, for a human but also just in general, had been reticent even the first time they slept together. What Vash is more interested in is whether or not Wolfwood is truly comfortable with this. He lets his hand stay where it is, but looks up to meet Wolfwood’s eyes, gaze questioning.

They both knew that, of course. Anyone who so much as looked at the typhoon knew that.
But Wolfwood sometimes liked to treat Vash delicately anyway—as though he was a little porcelain doll, smashed to pieces again and again, all its bits now held together with hot glue, haphazard and disjointed.
Wolfwood still thought he was a treasure. Something beautiful that could be imbued with love. Something worth beholding and playing with.

Summary
Wolfwood can’t help but watch him out of the corner of his eye, Vash’s thumbs working over the beads and tracing the lines of the cross with his nails. He holds it with a certain kind of reverence that Wolfwood doesn’t think comes from religious faith at all; thinks it has more to do with the fact that it’s Nicholas’s rosary that he’s holding.
(Or, Wolfwood lets Vash hold his rosary. He goes halfway crazy over it.)

Vash stiffens a little, back going rigid like it does every time all the attention is focused on him. Flight instinct kicking in, or whatever.
“I, uhm, I do,” he admits, dragging his prosthetic hand up the back of his neck. “I’m not particularly good, though.”

Of course, Vash would apologize for almost bleeding out. Nick should be the one apologizing. He’s the one who was careless enough to let those morons back him into a corner. Who was willfully ignorant of Vash’s wounds to the point that Vash couldn’t keep up anymore. The one who couldn’t do anything but scramble to help after Vash lost whatever strength he had left to pretend.

“Aw, you take things too seriously, Wolfwood!” Vash laughs. The laughter sends a buzzing, fluorescent rage through Wolfwood’s skull. You’re taking me too seriously, is what he means. Like Wolfwood could just stop caring about him. Like he should.
“And you take yourself too lightly,” he snaps, whipping the cloth to deliver a light thwap to Vash’s shoulder.
Vash lurches.
In which Vash reacts badly to a line from his childhood, and Wolfwood, as usual, has absolutely no idea what the hell is wrong with him.

“Uh,” Wolfwood says, quite intelligently. Livio snickers. Wolfwood glares. Livio grins and gives him a thumbs up.
