Summary
Wolfwood didn’t believe his eyes or nose when Vash walked into the kitchen.
The stench of an omega’s heat was in the air, the bitter kind when the person is anxious. He did a head count at the table and found no one was sick or presenting. Just Vash was absent. Seeing Vash present his neck at the doorway, smelling Vash, made him freeze in confusion. He held back any protective instinct he had by balling his fists, fighting the urge to walk over to Vash and bring Vash back to whatever nest he made.
Vash is a beta—well, was a beta since he’s known him, so why is he in heat?

“I don’t —” Vash starts, stops. He looks frustrated, a furrow between his brows and his flesh hand clenching into a fist. “What do you want me to say, Wolfwood?”
Wolfwood rolls his eyes and takes the cigarette out of his mouth, ashing over the side of the bed. “Trust you to turn this into what I want,” he says, feeling a little bad about the barb even as it slides over his lips. Vash doesn’t look hurt though, he still looks half-mutinous, like he might just get up and flee. “You’re the one who asked for this,” Wolfwood reminds him, “What do you want, Needle-noggin?”
Vash is avoiding his gaze again, eyes roaming around the bed, their naked bodies, the pack of cigarettes and lighter lying on the bed between them. “I want you to push me,” he says, words uncertain as they come out of his mouth, “I want you to hold me down.”
Wolfwood nods, “Easy enough,” he says, taking a drag off his cigarette, “So what happened tonight?”

"How would you do it?” Vash says, pressing harder, he grabs one of Wolfwood’s hands and guides it down to his waistband. “Like this? Would you have taken her up to our room or would you just have dragged her out here and had your way with her.”
This is why Vash doesn’t get drunk, there’s a carefully constructed filter in his brain that keeps these thoughts from barreling out of his mouth most of the time, but three bottles of whiskey deep and he feels furious. It’s not even that he doesn’t believe Wolfwood, he just can’t shake the thought, can’t get away from the image in his head, Wolfwood pulling the woman by the hand out of the bar, her head thrown back as she laughs. Pressing her up against this very wall, sliding a hand under her skirt.
“You’re off your rocker, Blondie,” Wolfwood says, but his fingers tighten on Vash’s waistband, “But fine, you want me to show you how I’d fuck her?”
Vash’s breath catches in his chest, “Yeah,” he says, pulling Wolfwood even closer against him.

They have their fights, but the challenges that Wolfwood poses in those moments are all targeted and impersonal. Revealing, yes, but not if you don’t know how to look. Vash prides himself in not coming across as someone who knows how to look. If Wolfwood isn’t being playful or absentminded, and it doesn’t seem he is from his posture, then…
“...I haven’t thought about it very much,” Vash admits, a more serious answer now to honour Wolfwood’s more serious question. “I used to, when I was younger.”
“So decades ago?”
“Haha.” Yes, decades. “It’s the sort of thing I think every man ends up pondering in his lifetime. Not so weird, right? Especially when you see so much death… but you know, I’ve never been the type to do anything out of a fear of consequences. Whatever is waiting for me after all’s said and done, I want to do good for the sake of it, because people deserve it. Not because there might be a Heaven waiting for me.”
Wolfwood shifts his weight; the balcony railing creaks as he does. “‘S the exact kinda idealistic answer a guy like you would have to offer.”

Not that Wolfwood is concerned. You can’t live as long as Vash has without kicking up a couple stones, and Vash doesn’t exactly live a conflict avoidant lifestyle, no matter how much he whines about all the violence. If something happened to upset him, that’s only natural. And if he wants to sit there and suck in his lips and pretend like it’s not happening instead of talking about it with Wolfwood, then that’s his own decision too. Wolfwood has no reason to be worried about the overgrown baby he happens to be travelling with, seated on the bed across the room.
But he needles, anyway, because the pouting is an eyesore—and he’s sure not to put anything else into it, keeping his eyes on the handgun he’s cleaning out, a rag spread out on the bed next to him to keep oil from getting on the covers.
“Not that any of your faces ain’t ugly,” Wolfwood continues, “but that one’s distractin’ me.”
“Are you done?” Vash asks.

Whatever the reason, Vash is upset enough to be pouting. Wolfwood employs his own methods to get him to talk about it.

They’re headed to the orphanage. Wolfwood knows it’s a bad idea to bring Vash to the orphanage, but he’s run out of options. He can’t leave Vash behind to deal with Knives alone when he hasn’t even gotten used to his legs yet, and he can’t ignore the hostages he just gave up by saving him in the first place. They’re fucked in every way they can be. The world is ending, and they’re taking a break to rescue some kids who will be doomed if Vash can’t get back on his feet regardless.

“Ah hey now… Aren’t you always asking me to tell you more stories?” Vash defends himself, and Wolfwood chokes on smoke during his inhale. Rude bastard, using his tactics against him. He doesn’t ask because he wants to be entertained damnit. Time to fluster him back then, Wolfwood concludes. He reaches behind himself and manages to shut the door, and the entire room goes silent as the sound from the downstairs casino gets muffled.
“Other stories, Vash,” Wolfwood kicks his boot again, and Vash nudges back with a playful smile, head still tilted. He looks innocent, cheeks flushed... he smiles sweetly when he understands the kick is an inquiry for a different tale.
“Like what?” Vash can indulge. Wolfwood is one of the few he bothers telling his past experiences to anyway. What could Wolfwood ask that he wouldn’t feel comfortable telling him at this point?
“How was your first time?”
