Ilya is sipping a cappuccino and watching Shane do very perverted yoga when he realizes that he doesn’t want to die.
It’s a dumb series of thoughts. He sees Shane bend over, neatly folding himself into a hunchback as his hands flatten by his feet, and Ilya thinks, I bet he’s going to love it when we’re old and grey and he can outrace me with my stupid hip replacement. And then he realizes that not only does he anticipate being old and grey enough to need a hip replacement, but that he actually wants to get there.

Shane Hollander, watching alone on his couch at the cottage that Ilya just left a few days ago, knows it's for the better. And he thinks he knows that Ilya thinks it's for the better too, that Ilya's excited for the move, excited to be closer to Shane. It's just hard to remember that when Ilya looks so distracted and sad in the wake of the news breaking.

He wants to coax his boyfriend into ordering takeout from that place they like around the corner from Ilya’s apartment and cheating on his diet a little. Then he wants to blow him on the couch, and he wants Shane to ride him. They can shower afterwards and put some highlights on the TV before falling asleep and ignoring Shane’s alarm the next morning. Shane can’t look at him. Instead, he notices the lamps. There’s so many of them just in his line of sight. Ilya must never have to use the overhead lights in this house. During the day, there’s the sun. And at night, the softness of the low light, just enough to see by. Shane imagines being able to sit here, after dark, a game in the background, the scene lit by nothing but the gentle glow of a few lamps. He imagines falling asleep soothed by hands softly carding through his hair and a heartbeat pulsing under his jawbone. It makes him feel domestic. It makes him feel like he does with a cold can of ginger ale in his hands.
He needs to leave.
“Hollander,” Ilya says.

Ilya gets off his bike and wraps his sweaty arms around Shane’s sweaty shoulders, presses their sweaty heads together and holds him tight. “Nooo, Hollander, you cannot leave me. Who will put Barrett and Marly in time out when they fuck up too many shots in a row?”
“I’m sure Bood will do it. He loves bossing people around.”
Bood stands up straight and salutes his captains. “I take the title with great honor. Enjoy the Ravens, Hollander—your legacy of being a chaste Victorian debutante will be remembered fondly but not carried on.”
This snaps that last thread of Shane’s refined patience. “I can pick up girls! I have no problem getting numbers and calling them and talking!”
Hazy smirks. “Innocent until proven guilty.”
“I can pick people up,” Shane says again, moving off his bike and out of Ilya’s sweaty embrace. “And I don’t have to do it by concocting schemes or stripping on top of the LAX bros’ coffee table.”
