Bucky was leaving for London tomorrow and as much as Gale hated to think it, preferred to reframe it as a much-needed break for both of them, he was sick and fucking tired of him. Bucky’d spent the last few days shredding through Gale’s patience and goodwill like a wheels-up landing. Half of him wondered why the Colonel hadn’t snatched his leave back and given him the writeup so fierce it’d crack the earth—the other half knew exactly why. Just like Gale and everyone else on base, he wanted Bucky out.

“Time stamps are right,” Gale says.
“Course they’re right,” says Brady. “It’s the same footage. Untouched. There’s nothing fucking there.”
“But there’s something there,” John says quietly, turning back to the thermal monitor. A shudder rolls down his spine. He spares a glance at Gale. He’s looking right back at him, jaw clenching, brows furrowed. “Alright. It’s fuckin’ weird.”
“Even if there was someone in the room,” Gale says, still looking at John as if he’s nervous to turn back to the screens. It flips something in John’s stomach. Gale doesn’t get nervous. “They’d be colder than the lowest human body temperature.”
John looks back at the thermogram. He swallows hard. “They’d be dead.”

John and Gale are the hosts of once-popular, now-failing ghost hunting show 100 Haunts. They do not believe in ghosts. All these shows are fake; with scripted, doctored footage. But when they're asked to return to a previous location, their second shoot there captures more and more horrors they can't explain.

Summary
“You’ll manage, Bucky,” Gale says before he can think better of it, and when John looks up at him with eyes wet and glistening, he wishes he could take it back. Maybe not just the cold, then.
“I’ll manage?” He sounds level at least, hot drunk but no different to normal. A little edge, a little rasp.
“Without ‘im. I know it’ll be—But you’ll manage.” John’s answering scoff has a meanness in it, and he does look down again, but thankfully he doesn’t stop walking.
“I’ll manage. Yeah, I’ll manage. I’ll manage without him, because I managed before, that right?”
“That’s right.” Gale’s murmuring again, and you don’t grow up in Wyoming without learning how to soothe a horse, and somehow that’s the voice he’s using right now. Tempted, even, to soothe like he would a horse: hand rubbed broad along John’s flank, cupping his neck like he’d cupped Gale in the pub, rubbing solid and firm. Might quiet those jitters, still jittering even though John’s trudging along with his sight on the ground, trying to sniff away his wet eyes.

Summary
“Don’t you ever, ever, do something that stupid again.” John thinks if he concentrates he can feel the sharp of Gale’s nails through his jacket. “Our time’s gonna come.”
When still, Bucky says nothing, Gale loosens his grip and places his hands softly on either side of John’s head. He places a delicate kiss on his cheek, his forehead, the bridge of his nose.
“You gotta stay with me,” he says, pleading.
I can feel this, Bucky thinks. Let this be the only thing I feel.

There were darker, worse thoughts fighting their way to the front. Baseball is what kept them away. Buck is what kept them away. He swallowed hard and pushed back against that compelling urge to just flee. Flee from the camp, from Buck, from all those things chasing him around in his brain that he couldn’t do anything about.
