Summary
When Vein first laid eyes on Xia Fei, his traitorous heart stuttered in his chest. Simply out of minor infatuation with a pretty face, of course, but it was surprising enough to startle him. Xia Fei came to him as this awkward, reticent college student in need of a job and, despite the nervous energy vibrating his frame, seemed determined enough to be there.
“I heard you were hiring models here. So.” He keeps his eyes focused on something behind Vein’s head as he toys with the sleeve of jacket. “So here I am.”
Vein smiles, unable to contain his interest. “Here you are.”

Summary
So Vein doesn’t trust anybody. How could he? He hasn’t survived a quarter of a century walking barefoot through hell being naïve. If anything, he prefers animals. They’re predictable. They demonstrate their intent with raised hackles and bluff charges. They’re simpleminded, concerned only about their young and where their next meal is coming from. If Vein had the time, he’d probably own a dog or two. It’d be a nice change of pace, having a companion that doesn’t have a malicious bone in its body. He has ample evidence in the shape of stab-wounds and bullet-holes to prove that the hearts of men are tainted with corruption. They always have been.
But God, (or whatever cosmic entity is running things out in the ether), has made a delightful habit of shitting in his dinner. It’s as if he’s got a standard-bearer hellbent on undermining him, or a trio of witches pointing notched knuckles toward Birnam Wood, because every lesson he’s ever learned fizzles out like a one-hit wonder the moment he lays eyes on a certain blond.

Summary
When Pure Vanilla throws open the balcony doors and holds his staff aloft, the first thing he sees are the tree’s branches devoid of his feathered friends. It’s an unwelcome sight, a clear departure from their usual routine. Had something happened? Has someone drawn them away?
A flutter of movement draws his eyes upwards towards the roof; instantly, relief floods through Pure Vanilla’s jam. The flock is mercifully still here, perched above his head on a nearby rooftop. They are, however, strangely silent and still, huddled closely together while glancing between Pure Vanilla and the tree. Pure Vanilla follows their nervous gaze, peering into the branches as he holds his staff high –
Only to spy a long, lithe form curled in the shadows.

Summary
Three brush strokes to the right. Two to the left. A hand smoothing over his forehead, sweeping his bangs aside.
Shadow Milk knows the pattern well. His hair is always brushed the same way, in movements that seem almost robotic in how perfectly they’ve mastered the repetition. The bristles of the brush always skim over his closed eyes with such care, nimbly avoiding anywhere they might prick or poke. It always ends with a few final touches, tucking any stray wisps back into place before the brush is set back down on the dresser before him.
Pure Vanilla’s hands smooth through Shadow Milk’s hair, coming to rest gently on his shoulders.
“There. Ready for the day?”
Shadow Milk does not answer.
Shadow Milk has not answered in a long, long time.

Summary
The room is too bright.
It’s quaint, in a nauseating sort of way. Polished floors glint from the gleaming honeycomb chandeliers overhead, make him squint. A few vases sprinkled here and there, filling the room with a sickeningly sweet scent – even a waffle-cone headrest framing the silken sheets of a neatly-tucked bed. Outside, the golden sun gleams, the gentle rays of light spilling past curtains that waver in the afternoon breeze.
It's meant to be beautiful. Luxurious. Welcoming.
With one sweep of his cane, Shadow Milk tears it apart.

Summary
He stops in front of a familiar stone, squatting instead of sitting on the damp earth.
Instead of his usual greetings, what comes out is a curt: “This is the last time I’ll be visiting you.”
It’s a little harsh. But there’s no one here to chide him for it anymore.
“Laoban, can you hear me?” he tries again, voice louder this time. “I won’t be coming back.”
Silence.
There’s no light flick to his forehead, no soft pinch at the bridge of his nose, and Xia Fei laughs at that. At himself.
Xia Fei visits Vein’s grave.

Summary
“Who said you’re supposed to trust him? Long as he pays, who cares.”
Xia Fei answers with a noise. Back of his throat, somewhere between displeased and disagreeing. Somewhere between ‘if you say so’ and ‘why would you say so’. Somewhere between ‘maybe I care’ and ‘maybe you should too’.
“I don’t know,” Xia Fei sighs out, kicking a pebble that has no business lying around where no one else does. He doesn’t know where they’re going. It doesn’t really matter. It’s too late to do anything productive, anyway, and his schedule is mostly determined by the man he’s walking next to, so any deviations from it caused by these few moments, and maybe next few hours, won’t be his to carry the blame for.
And it’s nicer this way, anyway.

Zhou Yu tilts his head, expression unchanging. “Do you not want it to be a date?”

“You’re also adorable,” Zhou Yu chuckles, and Zheng thinks this is now the best day of his life.

Zhou Yu goes silent, as if actually contemplating it with all his brainpower. “Well, if my Master is truly willing to do that for me…”
I’d be willing to do anything for you, Zheng thinks, internally, and it comes so naturally that he almost gasps aloud.

Summary
“Then, Gongjin…” As he speaks, his eyes drift from the glittering gold in Zhou Yu’s eyes to the exposed column of his neck, looking so small in the glow of the moon. “Is there anything you’d like to experience, while you’re still on this world?”
A tiny smile etches itself across Zhou Yu’s face. “Why do you ask?”
Zhou Yu makes a wild joke at dinner, and Zheng Chenggong can't get it out of his head until he pays his Servant a visit at night.
