Summary
“And that,” Andy announced grandly, “was the story of how I met your mother!”
It’s a story that begins in 2006, with a beautiful red-haired stranger falling asleep on Andy’s shoulder on the subway. It involves four extra stops, one very overprepared journalist, a coffee date, a first kiss, and the art of falling in love again and again.
It’s also, as Emily is quick to point out, a story that somehow includes their entire marriage and the birth of their daughter.
Andy maintains that it’s all relevant context. After all, how do you explain a whole lifetime of love without starting at the beginning?

Her cheeks warmed, more to do with the nebulous idea of Andy kissing other women, than the misunderstanding. An unnecessary bothersome thought she brushed aside for the time being. Andrea had been ticking off the list of paramours from the last two decades after the moody chef and to the blonde’s surprise, a handful of women’s names had surfaced.

And somewhere in the middle of all of it, her mind snags, unhelpfully, on the mug. On Andy, drinking her coffee out of a soup bowl, or one of those transparent plastic cups they hand out at festivals, like a woman in the middle of some minor personal collapse she's decided to find charming. Emily has never once in her life left a problem lying there unsolved. It isn't in her. It isn't who she is.
So Andy needs a mug.
She reaches for her phone on the nightstand, unlocks it, and adds it to her list for the week, right there between dry cleaning and call Patrick.Or: Andy loses two decades of mugs in a move. Emily Charlton spends the next year replacing them, one at a time, each with a story she never quite explains. It takes Andy considerably longer than it should to work out why.
