Summary
O! how shall summer's honey breath hold out,
Against the wrackful siege of battering days,
When rocks impregnable are not so stout,
Nor gates of steel so strong but Time decays?
- William Shakespeare, Sonnet 65On the worst day of their lives, as they fight to kill each other atop the walls of Gondolin, Idril, Tuor, and Maeglin find themselves flung into the future and separated. Tuor wakes in a sacred pool, Idril in mountains full of shadows, and Maeglin (still holding Eärendil) right near a stronghold of Men.
Faramir would like to know why someone is in the Forbidden Pool right after he got Gollum out of it, Frodo would like to know why this elf-lady is reacting so strongly to them calling upon the Light of Eärendil, and Éowyn would like to know if this elf will lend her his armor so she can sneak out to fight...

Summary
"Few stories were told of Nienna, not because she was not loved, but because she was loved too much. Those elves who dwelled in Valinor knew her sorrows and did not pry at them. Her part in the stories of others was glossed over, her name whispered gently, her tale left unspoken and unrecorded. Such was the respect given to her, for all people might need pity some day.
If an exile from over the sea needed to learn, or a new child asked, they were shared only snippets of thought, memories, echoes of what was told perhaps only once long ago.
These were the things that were not said."

Bilbo picks up an Elvish dagger in the troll-hoard, and it speaks to him. The elf-ghost inside is mysterious, but he turns out to be decent company, for all that, and he's certainly Bilbo's equal in making petty comments about everyone and everything.
AKA the fic where Maeglin has been trapped in Sting since his death, and gets really attached (as all elves tend to) to hobbits.

"Who are you?"
“No one.” says the man eventually. “A runaway thrall of Dor-Lómin.”
“And you’re not going to ask who I am?”
The man raises one shoulder, his expression softening.
“I thought your story might be much the same.”

Summary
A monarch cannot be a private person. In many ways, they exist only as a public persona - and more than one prince might assume that persona. In times of crisis people are not particularly inclined to question such things. After all: there must always be a king.
*
Tuor had laughed outright, when this suggestion was first made to him. He had stopped only when he realised Círdan had not intended it to be a joke.
“We can’t just pretend that Artanáro is still alive.” he objected. “People will notice.”
“They will accept it if it comforts them,” countered Círdan, refusing to acknowledge that he well knew how ridiculous this charade would be. “Besides,” he went on, tired. “I suspect it would not be the first time.”
